type of villaboard screws

Are plasterboard bugle screws ok to fix villaboard to the ceiling? I've used fibre cement nails on the walls.

Why would you use Villaboard on the ceiling and not gyprock. You're not going to tile it are you.

In any case you should use self embedding head screws on Villaboard.

Thanks bazza, the shed ceiling is rather low and may take a buffeting over time.

I would advise gluing it up with the Gyprock glue. If it is just in the shed and you don't mind exposed screws it would be better to use wafer head screws.

When I did the underside of my verandah into the steel framing with 600mm centres on the battens a lot of it pulled through the self embedding head screws and I ended up rescrewing it with wafer head screws and just painted over the heads.

Thanks for the options Bazza. I have smaller centres around 450mm. Are the self embedding screws for timber readily available from a hardware store?

Go the Wafer / Washer Headed screws.

Like Ivan says I would go for the wafers because the SEH screws tend to compress and break the fibres and weaken the Villaboard. You would only need to use the SEH screws if you wanted a flush finish like in a bathroom etc.

Against better judgment, I'm going for the flush finish. At the hardware I found two types of screws for villaboard. Firstly, the one Bazza suggested "S" point self embedding head countersunk ribbed head and Secondly, Type 17 point self daisy head countersunk ribbed head. Has anyone had good success with the daisy head screws?

Screwing into pine I had trouble getting the things to set right, quite a few ended up proud of the board, only tried them once so my experience may not be worth much.

I would go with the ribbed head screws and not the daisy head screws. You will find the daisy head screws have less bearing surface and pull through easier than the ribbed head ones. The daisy head screws are ok on thicker material like Hardiplank but not on Villaboard

You really need a proper electric screwdriver with a nose cone on it to use these screws. With a nose cone you can set the screws so they are just below the surface and then you can flush finish the screws with Gyprock finishing cement.

postscript, as recommended by the guys the wafer screws are the way to go, the wife has got used to the exposed screw heads after I told her that at least it won't fall on her head. I used the SEH screws on the recessed edges. Thanks all.

Barry had it right the daisy heads are not much chop. I would have used the ribbed screws and stopped them up, but thats me :)
