Nothing to do with woodwork. Conditions. If you have seen this before and know the answer please give the others a go. PM me if you already know and I'll acknowledge you here.
My wife said there are no legs on a bus, only wheels. She's a damn Capricorn and that's NOT the answer.
For those who can't add 2 and 2 I'll put a multiple choice poll in as well. Just have a punt.
Seven girls are on a bus (one is the driver..sheesh)and each has seven backpacks. Each backpack has seven large cats inside. For each large cat there are seven small cats. (For the purpose of the exercise assume they are very strong girls and that cats are allowed on buses).
Question: How many legs on the bus. (only warm blooded legs are counted i.e. no seat, chair or stool steel, aluminium or wooden legs.
Felicitations and good thoughts for the looming beer and prawn fest (some of you have already started it seems ). I hope everyone over-indulges and is contented.

Well Shedhand having spent 5 years building them buses that is and 25+ years repairing and driving them I have a different view.
I am also a Capricorn and your swmbo is wrong their are legs on a bus even without passengers, driver etc. As for Animal's none but seeing eye dogs are permitted on any public passenger vehicle so the cats/kittens would have been there in the first place. Lets not haggle to much re regulations etc etc.
This answer due to technical terms is harder than it seems.
Simply seats don't have legs the frames do.
So the bus as a whole therefore does have legs.
As every vehicle ever built is different in style/design and configuration/specs,
Like many Maths questions of this type facts for the question are missing see below:-
some seat frames have two legs and mounted to the side rail
some have one each and mounted to the side rail
others have 4 legs,
then of course each vehicle may have between 8 seats and 60+ seats on each vehicle, but not all seat frames are mounted with legs some dont have them at all ( now there's a puzzle).
The drivers seat frame doesn't have legs it has a pedestal base so you can't include that.

depends how you want to analyse the question.
I chose to believe that each girl (and one is the driver) has put their legs on the bus (floor) and not the seats... so 14.... but I also got 1582 if I decide to count all the possible number of legs 'in' the bus.

It just says the girls are on the bus. The back packs they have could be at home....... so the cats are too. How are the going to carry seven backpacks anyway, and also if you try and take cats onto a bus they usually all run away, then a lot of fun ensues trying to herd them back onto the bus. So they aren't on the bus either. Then again it could be some jocular reference to girls and pussies, but then the joke would be in that sealed section. Aah! I give up. must be getting slow in my old age. Buses have wheels. Thats my answer. Us wives must stick together. I'm not a Capricorn either. just sensible.:p
Geoff Dean
22nd December 2007, 07:07 PM
By my calculations there are 10990 legs on bus. As you didn't mention a driver, I have assumed there is not one.
7 girls = 14 legs
7 girls x 7 backpacks = 49 backpacks
49 backpacks x 7 large cats = 343 large cats =1372 legs
343 large cats x 7 small cats =2401 small cats = 9604 legs.
9604+1372+14=10990 legs.
I also think that there is some "trick" to this, as the answer seems too obvious.

7 girls
7 backbacks
7 big cats
7 small cats
each backpack has 7 x 7 + 7 cats = 224 legs
7 backpacks = 1568 + 2 = 1570 legs per girl
7 girls = 10990 legs

Shedhand like many things there is always more than one way to skin a cat.
So with all these cats how many violins strings could be had???
What age are the GIRL's as you have to be over 21 to be able to get your bus drivers licence in OZ so a girl wouldn't be a bus driver so once again the figure is out. If she is over 21 she isn't a girl she is a woman .

My wife said there are no legs on a bus, only wheels. She's a damn Capricorn and that's NOT the answer.
For those who can't add 2 and 2 I'll put a multiple choice poll in as well. Just have a punt.
OK...
Once upon a time there was a bus. It was parked at a bus stop...just parked there OK? The bus had cantilevered seats..no legs, OK?
It wasn't very long before seven live, complete adult women (or it could have been men) each of them struggling under the weight of 7 very large backpacks, happened upon said bus. One of the women (or it could have been men) said to the 6 women (or it could have been men) bloody oath these 7 large backpacks I'm carrying are damned heavy with these 7 large, live, complete cats inside each backpack with 7 smaller live complete cats for each large live complete cat stuffed in with them. You 6 must be struggling under the burden of your own 7 backpacks containing 7 large, live, complete cats inside each of them along with the 7 smaller live, complete cats for each large live complete cat inside.
They agreed this was so. Whereupon the first woman suggested they commandeer the said bus. At which point each of the other 6 stout women complete with both natural legs said "why the hell not".
So each live, complete woman - though heavy set and strong (could have been heavy set strong men) - boarded the aforementioned bus each carrying their 7 backpacks full of the aforementioned multiple numbers of live and complete large 63066 and small members of the Felis silvestris catus family.
While they had no particular destination in mind they never-the-less enjoyed busing around Sydney and environs, (I was going to say traipsing which would imply they were walking around inside the bus which is dangerous) but they were on the bus with their load and not inclined to walk any further whilst weighed down by what was - by this time - a heavy load of smelly heaving and very angry cats).
Now as to the total number of warmblooded legs of both species (Felis silvestris catus and human) it is necessary to also consider how long they were spending on the bus. And in considering this I'm tending to agree that more detail was indeed necessary in the original question. All (I can say is that by necessity it had to be a reasonably long trip due to the need for caution in Wongo's neighborhood. Orientals are known for their appetite for things furry that we (not me Wongo - I am one of your brothers...bugger the gwai lo :D) foreign devils regard as members of our families.
It could be assumed therefore that its inevitable that on such an extended journey one or more of the large cats would have gotten very hungry and just may have consumed 1 or more of their offspring or indeed one or more of the offending stout women.
What does all this mean (APART FROM BORDERING ON USELESS DRIVEL)?
Quite simply fellow forumites....bugger all in the big scheme of things.
So, the answer my friends is not in the bloody wind but evident in the dried stools of the surviving cats. However, before the little cannibals started I can tell you all the the correct number of legs extant at the beginning of the journey was....
10,990.
See Gregs calculation as posted by the clever dick earlier in the forum.
Bye for now.
Merry xmas.
hohoho (oops! can't say that)....hmmmm....happy whatever you celebrate.

Seven women at least 21 years old and less than 60 years old are on a bus (one is the driver..sheesh)and each has seven backpacks. Each backpack has seven large live cats inside complete with legs. For each large cat there are seven small live cats complete with little legs. (For the purpose of the exercise assume they are very strong girls and that cats are allowed on buses).
Question: How many legs on the bus. (only warm blooded legs are counted) i.e. no seat, chair or stool steel, aluminium or wooden legs. No-one is going to gut the cats for violin strings and no-one is going to eat any! (control yourself Wong me old china).

OK, getting better, but still not enough information.
1. "Has 7 backpacks" is not is same as "Brought along 7 backpacks". They may each have (own) 7 backpacks, but didn't bother to bring them along.
2. Where are the 7 small cats per large cat? It's implied they were also brought along, but not specifically stated. They may be at home wondering where all the large cats have disappeared to. Or out chasing buses.
3. No where is it stated that all the girls( women) and cats (if indeed there are ANY cats) on the bus have the number of legs normally assoicated with that particular creature. There may perhaps be one or more girls (sorry women) who have tragically lost a leg. Given that we are only allowed to count warm-blooded legs, that means artificial legs don't count. Same story for the cats (if there are any cats... and / or artificial cat legs...)
So from the information given, we can't state with any certainty that there are ANY legs on the bus.
In fact, unless you can post a picture of the bus, I'm reluctant to acccept there even IS a bus.
Now seriously, isn't this a lot more fun then trying to come up with an answer?

I ,for one, certainly never thought the answer was in any way the point of this exercise. No other discussion of the web, re number of legs on buses, seems to be of this opinion either (of there being any point to this exercise) Not unless the answer is in fact funny, in which case that is the point.
I am now going to have a nice cup of tea, in no way connected with the point of legs on cats or buses on legs or anything pointless at all. Do I make myself clear?

Thats cold feet, not legs. and you don't get to know that until you get to share their bed and they try to warm their feet on you legs. And that wont happen if you meet these girls on a bus unless you offer to carry their bags for them. And they are bloody heavy bags. And then you might get the cold shoulder too. So any way, if some guy is trying his luck on the bus 'cause their are all these girls to chose from, and he's really strong so he's carrying all the bags, does his legs count too?:?

once you take account of all the people who are missing one or more legs or arms (through amputation), the average lassie has less than two legs (I'm not sure about the average moggie) so there can't be 10990 legs IN the bus

http://www.messybeast.com/moggycat/george-stubbs.htmWell, i'll be damned. Never knew so much time money and expertise was wasted on cats. I always thought you just put 'em in a hessian bag and dumped them in the river. So may be the bus was full of George Stubbs clones... that would make 5454 legs.

I'm loving the banter but, and this is bugging me, before we all turn antiseptic septic (septic tank = yank) don't we believe that it is indeed "maths" in the original Queen's tongue?
I despair the day when we have slid so far down into the drum that we become indistinguishable from americans.

Ah! That's why I'm having trouble! I can't do "math" only "maths". Doing math I start to sound like I'm out of the Peanut Gallery.

ah yes Prozac. I DID indeed blunder. I humbly apologise. Maths time it is. Ubeaut's spell checker wants me to use a bloody "z" in apologise...never, I say. resist the infidels. :p

Sorry SH, but I am fearing the day that the current generation make us yanks because lazy teachers have failed them and us. Zee, zed, colour, color, it's becoming blancmange.

Did all the girls stay on the bus until it got to its final destination?
If half of them got off before the count was done that would make it very difficult, because 7 girls cannot be devided in half.

I guess you need some special saw to divide girls in half?

I missed this first time round, and have just carefully read through the entire 7 pages.
However, one issue that noone seems to have addressed is the advertising on the bus. I've seen a few pantyhose ads on the sides and backs of buses, and I feel very strongly that the legs featured in these pictures should be counted as "legs on bus".
So, I'd like (need) to see photos of all sides of the bus before I commit to an answer...
Cheers,
Andrew
