View Full Version : Server cabinet part?

I have some odd bits of timber lying around and rather than have an industrial looking server cabinet I'd go for something a bit more earthy. Looking at around a 6 RU (rack unit) height cabinet. Now construction of the cabinet isn't a problem but I'm having difficulty in one aspect which I hope someone can help me out with.

I'm having trouble, probably because I don't know the technical term, the strip of metal which the cage nuts sit in and give the rack it's unitform spacing of RU's when you bolt equipment into it. I'd like to purchase these strips and just bolt them into the wooden cabinet, if they are even available.

Can anyone help me out where I might find such things or what they are called to start with? Must say I haven't checked bunnings but something tells me they probably don't carry it.

I know it's probably easier to go out an buy a metal box but would like to try my own version if it's possible. I chose this forums since it's electrical and an electrical orientated person will in all likelyhood have more of a chance to know what I'm talking about. If there is a more suitable forum please feel free to move this thread there.

Sounds like you want what's called an 'open server rack' it's just the guts, without the metal casing.

Something like this: http://www.istarusa.com/server_cabinet/open_frame_rack/

Not sure how you'll go getting a 6U one though. Probably easier to get a wall-mount unit and strip the casing.

Kind of but I don't actually need all the frame. Just the strip of punched out metal squares that the cage nuts sit in. Buying a frame etc will be overkill and expensive.

Hmmm. Dunno about getting just that part.

I'll have a look at work on monday, we might have an old rack the boss wants to get rid of. If so I can rip out the rails and send them to you if you like.

Might be a bit of trouble sending them via post. Appreciate the offer though. Pity you aren't in Sydney. I'd just drop buy and pick em up. See if it's possible but let me try to source something locally first as that may be the easiest option. Cost of a new 4RU wall mount (200mm deep) is around $40 so I'm looking at spending alot less than that. Otherwise I'll just cut the back off and screw it into the box and settle for 4RU worse comes to worse with a utility draw 2RU big.

Ive also got a set of strips with the square holes punched out for the cage nuts to go in, they are gold but.

happy to cut them down (off a old 32u comms rack) and post them if you like., 6u is not all that big and shouldnt be an issue to post (would fit in a $6 postbag).
