Vegie Patch How To

Hello all,

I have a number of H4 Treated Pine sleepers that I wish to use to make a vegie patch for the wife. What would be the simplest and best way to do this? Is there a simple plan somewhere that I could follow to construct it?

I made a herb garden for my wife out of sleepers. I simply cut some 1.2M star pickets in half and bashed them into the ground around the perimiter near the corners or at the ends of the sleeper where the bed is longer than 2 sleepers. As I have to mow around the bed I simply spray herbicide along the outside of bed using a hood over the nozzle so none of the chemicals go on the herbs. (A plastic bottle can be adapted if you don't have a hood.) Works well and the patch can be any size you want. Modern pickes are now 'galvanised' and will last longer than you.

I just did one myself using old railway sleepers I got cheap.:q....took a sledgy and hammered in 900mm star pickets till they were showing 300mm...(the width of the sleeper)....layed the sleeper down on its edge and hammered in a four inch nail through the picket to hold them in place ....layed heaps of newspaper down where it was going ( to prevent weeds from growing )..wheeled in 2 1/2 cubic meters of fresh soil, mixed it with blood and bone and some organic material....and started planting :U

See your local pigeon flyers when you're about to fill it. They give you the good stuff. :D

Dob't forget to cover the top with two or three sheets of newspaper, then put on new potting soil to prevent ant weeds sprouting from your filling.

Look up a book called "Esther Dean's No Dig Garden". For lazy bu**a's like meself. :(
