Am intending to use a new mop brush for applying sanding sealer to a bookcase I have constructed. Was wondering if anyone knew what I should do with the brush before use in terms of preparing the bristles, and whether sanding sealer needs cutting back with anything for the first coat. Am new to all this as you might have guessed. Any help appreciated.

Hi Anjoda,

FWIW I've used a small mop for applying shellac and it needed no prep.

The sanding sealer I use needs cutting at least a third for any coat but who knows for what you've got. Mine's nitrocellulose cut with general purpose thinners.

I'd say try a sample cut 2/3rds on a scrap and then work from there.

Same deal if you're starting with full strength shellac.

Thanks very much for that. Will take your advice on the first coat. A frosty crisp morning here in London, so I will give it a try when the sun comes up a little higher!
