I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences (good or bad) as a tradesman or someone in need of a tradesman with any INTERNET based job services.
As far as I know there are 2 around INTERNET and sms based

As a tradesman looking for work it seems a good idea but the initial cost is a hurdle.

The way one works is the tradesman pays a registration fee to be a member.
The customer lodges there job on-line (or via phone) free of charge.
The company SMSs (or emails) the job to a tradesman that meets the criteria of the job.
The tradesman then excepts the job if he want it and pays a small fee for the details.

The other I believe the tradesman pays a large member fee for so many job leads.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experiences

About 20 years ago I used to do a lot of work for a body hire firm called Trojan (http://www.trojanworkforce.com.au/jobs/jobs_me_fs.htm). I was a carpenter/foreman and they usually gave me as much work as I could handle if ever I had a slack period. The rates aren't as high as you'd get contracting direct, but there's no headaches chasing money. Just submit your time sheet and get paid.

A builder might ring them up and say he wants a chippy or a sparky or whatever for the next day, then they might ring me and see if I'm busy. Or if I had nothing on myself, I might ring them and see if there's anything on. I also took on a few foreman jobs through them, which went for the duration of a project.

The business started as 'Troubleshooters Available' and it was a union busting enterprise run by Pat Hogan. (edit: they actually won a court case against the unions for harassment and site lock outs to subbys, at one time) He was a great bloke to deal with and always willing to lend a hand to any of the boys if they were having any problems.
I believe that he sold it off about ten years ago when it was quite strong, and it looks like it's still going well.

If you're after work, then I'd give them a call and see what they're offering, although there may not be as much work for a sparky as there would be for chippies and labourers, but I wouldn't really know what's happening with them at the moment.

I think I might try to chase up Pat and see what he's up to at the moment, just to say g'day again. He helped me out quite a bit during a rough patch that I went through.
