Was on the forum this morning and around 9-34am couldn't navigate to any posts or threads. Just kept getting "The server is busy at the moment, please try again later" Gave up on it after a while but came back later and all was well. Did anyone else have this problem or was it just me.

No they didn't single you out for special treatment John, I had the same problem.

It is not an altogethe runcommon occurrence with the forum, seems to be specific to the forum, as I can always get to other sites OK when that happens.

Yahoo was also out for a while this morning.

We run our web site through them and was unable to access it or any other ones that I know of.

Was only for a short time. All ok now.

Loading anything and everything

Even when posting it took over 5 mins and in the end I canceled it only to find two postings had gone through  removed one.

Everything else is fine.

Hi guys

I've updated some settings that should help, I've also ordered more ram for the database server.

Also over the last week several ISP's have had trouble reaching certain parts of the world due to an undersea cable being cut.

I went away to have a look around the forum and when I tried to get back in here it just hung for 3 minutes, ( yep I timed it) and then got "The server is busy" pop up again.
Waited a bit and then tried again and got back on. Will try on a computer forum that I go to just to make sure its not a problem with my computer or internet connection.

Like John, I am having problems with the forum. At times it is very slow, took an age to post my last post. At the moment I am getting the "Server too busy" or "Database error" screens.

Forum has been quite flakey over the last week or so.

Yep, can confirm it is only the forum that is flakey, everything else I use on the net appears to be working fine.

Bigfooty.com which is 20 times bigger than this forum and SMC put together, has never in the 5 years i have been a member been slow and have a "server to busy" message. Why is this forum so slow then?

Well it should be running like greased lightning now and will get faster by tomorrow.

SMC has in the past had major speed problems, drop outs etc, there was a heap of admin posts about it a couple of years ago.

Footy sites are hosted on 12 or 15 servers, way out of our tiny budget and even has problems from time to time. Below are 3 of many quotes (from different threads) from there:

Bigfooty is slow as a http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.bigfooty.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.bigfooty.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.bigfooty.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif in a cold night street after a long session in the pub when a cop car is comming down the street.

Yeh its slow, but i gotta Admit, im loving the lack of server busy messages for once!!!!
it is fine, but i have had some error thing come up and the page stops loading, all i have to do is re load the page it says 'the operation timed out' it is saying ti right now:((Whole heap of tweeks, program upgrade and few gig extra ram has so far brought us back up to speed, thanks to Steven and he's doing more tonight.

Some find more problems here because they spend hours here daily no probs with other forums because they spend maybe an hour or so there weekly or monthly. Don't visit tit but I'd warrant a guess that the Bloke Shed isn't big enough to get problems yet.

Our problem has been with intermittent spikes to server load where it goes from virtually no load to massive almost overload in a few seconds then a minute later it's back down to next to none again below is a sample:

13:49:02 up 226 days, 3:49, 2 users, load average: 1.30
13:49:58 up 226 days, 3:50, 2 users, load average: 7.26
13:54:00 up 226 days, 3:54, 2 users, load average: 0.65
13:55:32 up 226 days, 3:55, 2 users, load average: 1.06
13:56:05 up 226 days, 3:56, 2 users, load average: 2.10
13:56:56 up 226 days, 3:57, 2 users, load average: 7.70
13:58:16 up 226 days, 3:58, 2 users, load average: 13.06
14:02:21 up 226 days, 4:02, 2 users, load average: 0.79
14:05:37 up 226 days, 4:05, 2 users, load average: 0.59

Steven has also booked a site examination with a specialist team of guru's to see if they can sort out the problem. Hopefully this will be fixed with their help and knowledge.

Cheers - Neil :U

PS All sites have problems from time to time. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist.

If this site is still running slow you might also consider the fact that it might just be at your end. Slow server slow modem, programs running in the background, viruses, cache, registry, etc, etc, etc. Not all problems stem from the site you're on.

thanks to Steven and he's doing more tonight. Steven has done a wonderful job and was right on the ball from the word go on this.

Some find more problems here because they spend hours here daily It's a great place to be:)

PS All sites have problems from time to time. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist. Agreed. I guess you have spoiled us Neil, we are so use to good service from this site, we take it for granted and come to expect it all the time.

Just another reason for taking this opportunity to thank all the staff, admins, mods and everyone else who has a hand in running this site.
I think everyone will agree its a mammoth task and we owe them all a great deal of gratitude.:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:
