Rainwater tank and little stones

Hi All,
I am about ready to plonk a 2500 ltr rainwater tank onto a sand base,I have left roughly 50 mm or so from the top of the sand to the top of the retaining wall( sleepers)my intention is to fill this up with those small white stones once the tank is in place.

Can I take take the stones right up to the side of the tank allowing its 50mm depth of stones or would the stones over a period of time tend to indent the tank and possibly cause problems later.

There will be zero traffic around the tank.

Can't see it being any dramas- is it only for aesthetics? If it's only to hide the sand and it's not compacted into the tank side shouldn't be a drama I wouldn't think?

it would probably be fine for a plastic or concrete tank but may cause problems in the long term for a metal tank. Over time you'd get a build up of organic material amongst the pebbles (leaves etc) This would hold moisture and would eventually cause corrosion. It would, of course depend on your local conditions. Around here, with very high rainfall and growth rates it would happen in a few years (the build up, not neccesarily the corrosion)

Are you placing a membrane on the sand before you plonk? :oo:

You must do that you know, or the bottom will rot out in no time. I used "Tar Paper" thirty years ago, and it's as good as the day it went under the tank.

Thanks guys,the tank is plastic ,sorry should have mentioned that in first post.
