Oven Cabinet

Hello all, I have been following past posts regarding flat-pac kitchens and DYI kitchens. Well I bit the bullet and have started to make my own. It has been quite frustrating but dam fun, and the end is near and the finished product is fantastic. I will post up pics when finished.
I do have 1 question PLZ PLZ PLZ.......I have purchased an under-bench oven. I am now making the cupboard as per oven instructions. Questions are...................
1) I have 2 sides, 1 base and a shelf to place oven on. Is there a back to the cupboard?
2) If there is a back same as cupboard, (16mm laminate sheet)
3) if no back would I put some sort of safety backing for heat as it is going against wall that has been lined with gyprock over masonary?
4) Should I make any vent holes in bottom of cupboard and shelf?


Any help muchly appreciated.

The way i do it:

See attachment...basically build a normal cupboard, does not need a back.
Then cut out your oven surrond from what ever material you are using for the doors.
Attach the surround to the cupboard with some 25x25mm timber screwed from inside the cupboard.
Cut some rails the some width as the bottom of the oven surround. Push in oven and screw in place.

I used IKEA and it's like this.

base (with a opening at the back ? for air or wiring) / 2 sides / ply backing / a metal rail top front / wooden top back / 2 metal angles near the bottom attached to the sides adjustable up and down to accomodate oven sizes - the oven sits on this / a cover plate that you can cut to size and pop on after you install the oven.

so far my ovens have fit without modification. I'll take a photo tomorrow.

Here is an exploded view from our catalogue of how one of our standard underbench oven units goes together.

No back required - and the two top rails are in vertical orientation rather than the usual horizontal aspect in order to facilitate the placement of a cooktop above the oven if reqired.

Normally there should not be enough heat behind an oven for the neighbouring materials to require a fire retardant rating.

Most ovens designed for fitting in wall units or under benchtops have allowance for the unit to vent though the sides and front of the housing, so extra venting is not required but can't hurt either.

Of course if you are going to have thermolaminate doors next to the oven you will need to consider some form of shielding to avoid damage to the vinyl.

The two extra boards hanging out the front are the coloured fascia strips that fill in the space above and/or below the oven after it is fitted.

Have you decided on the make of oven, then get their manual and it will show the sizes etc, my oven cupboard made to the oven manufacturing specs is a sealed unit. The oven itself has air inlet and exhaust so the cupboard need to be sealed for it to work.:2tsup:
