i wish to make up a window for a gable, the (framed) opening being 880 * 620, using 6mm glass. If I opt for 40mm square stock, would dressed oregon (which I have) be suitable, or should I try to find some wr cedar? - would the weight of the glass be significant in the choice?

Oregon would be fine so long as it is protected externally - i.e. primed on all surfaces/cuts and finished in a decent exterior paint. Depending upon how you wish to secure the glass the structural integrity of the window frame should not be an issue so long as the timber window frame is well supported in the existing frame. If you expect a piece of 40x40 to hold up on it's own without adequate support/bracing (esp. underneath) from the surrounding house frame that's a different issue.

If you wish to use different timber the staff at the Timber Promotion Council (in Victoria) would be able to give you the best advice.
