View Full Version : Electrical Q - Dimmers

Hi, I was wondering if any one out there might know a bit about electrical products such as dimmers...I recently installed one into a 2-way switch and instead of wiring as per the diagram (to the load bearing switch) it was easier to wire it in to the line switch. I wondered if this would have any effect on the dimmer mech - it is still in series with the load, the only difference is that mech would continually have 240V "at" it. It seems to work fine and saves me drilling the architrave out for a giant mech!!! (timber is not my thing) Maybe I should try an electronics formum!!! :D

going off topic just slightly .....its my experiance that dimmer switches must suit the application .....you just cant chuck in any old dimmer switch to create a mood ....they come in various wattages ...so if your running four lights @ 60w from a dimmer switch with a rating of 200watts your already 40watts over ...of course its much worse if your running 4 x 100w globes ....most switches overloaded to this degree usually melt.....
and then there is the compatability issue ......a lot of dimmer switches are uncompatable with electronic controlled downlight transformers and fluro lights ......
just some food for thought .....

If you are deliberately doing electrical work incorrectly that is worse than doing it incorrectly through ignorance. You won't get much more advice here than to get a sparky....
