Does anyone have a good technique for creating a housing on posts for bearers, Im using a circular saw to make cuts in the posts the same width ad depth as the bearer and chsieling it out and finishing it with a plane unfortunately I'm making a bit of a mess out of them out of 3 im only happy with one as they are so expensive i cant afford to keep making mistakes .. Is their an easier way I was to do this , can you pay a timber yard to cut these out for you .... thanks Paul

G'day Paul, you're on the right track - do you run the saw through the waste many times so most of the waste can be knocked out with a hammer and then clean up with a chisel? Also I use a Stanley yellow roofing square to guide the saw on the two outside cuts - quick and accurate guide.

Cheers

Yes i have been running the saw through the waste i might try and run it a few more times. Im not sure what you mean about a roofing square but from reading that it occured to me that i should cut the outside first with a handsaw to get this accurate this would probably fix one of the problems i came across...

cheers paul

Here is a link to the roofing square.

You can use a clamp to hold it in place on a vertical post for the two outside cuts.

ok i see what you are saying i will pick one of these and up and give this a try , you mention two outside cuts however in my case I'm fully housing the bearer so that it is level with the top of the post so there is only one outside cut, one of the problems i had was these where not level as the circular saw must have gone over the line this will probably solve that issue .... cheers paul
