bed bond

I am trying to plaster two alcoves in a room and am using bed bond plaster as a finish coat. My problem is that the mix appears gritty and almost lumpy so that a smooth finish is impossible to achieve. Am i using the wrong type of plaster?. I have plastered a room before and never had this problem. So help and advice would be most welcome

sounds like the stuff is not right .... I havent used bad bond but I thought it was smooth. Maybe you bought a crack-filling/disguising product instead?

Hmm bed bond? sound like you mean base bond?

Either way is sounds as though you are using a "bedding cement" the term usually associated with "bedding" in tapes. Which is not the type of plaster to be used as a finshing coat.

Finishing coats either a "all purpose" type or straight finishing compound come in a pre mixed form. In a bucket or cardboard box.

If you have a bucket of top coat that is lumpy or gritty it will be because it is to old. The same can happen to base coat that is too old. When old base coat is mixed it will not set consistantly which will cause it to go lumpy and scratchy.

To help prolong the life of stored base coat, or any bagged plaster, store it in a very dry spot off the concrete floor.

The product I have is labelled

Prudent
Bedbond.

My wife purchased it from a specialist plaster/plasterboard supplier and explained carefully what it was to be used for.
My wife is a practical intelligent woman but feels she was fobbed off with whatever came to hand i.e unsuitable and overage. material.

Thank you for your prompt and useful reply. Guess I'll look for another supplier, one I can trust.

Jerry, There are many new products comming onto the market all the time, particularly imported products. I have not seen this product but as its name suggest it is for bedding tapes and 2nd coating, not finishing coats.

Any of the finishing compounds will do what you need.
