If you liked The Great Escape, and oldies, then you'd like Stalag 17.
Bridge over the River Kwai (A bit of woodwork in that too)
Patton
The Battle of the River Plate
And probably lots more that don't come to mind straight away.

Das BootDas Boot was good. The Enemy Below is another good sub movie.
I recently watched an interesting conspiracy doco on the Kursk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_submarine_K-141_Kursk).
You can watch it here (http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=3601018731467852276&autoPlay=true&playerMode=embedded).

A man who knows his movies. Especially the first 2. :) And don't forget Platoon.

My problem is, some of them are a bit too real and give my memories the whim-whams. :(

I'll second
The Thin Red Line (the re-make is one of my all time favorite films)
and, Band of Brothers. (LOVE the epic stories- and at ten episodes- this qualifies)

There are many others of course, but you can't IMO go past these.

ss, noticing the type you like, I can't believe no has mentioned 'Where Eagles Dare' with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. The last 30 min are worth the whole movie, but that doesn't mean the rest is a sleeper. Very good '60s war movie.

My all time fav is Band of Brothers as it was based on the accounts of real people. Apparently it stayed fairly true to the accounts given by those that were part of that regiment. I have the DVD series and the book. One of my places to visit before I die is Normandy to view the area where it started.

G'day,

Three of my all-time-top movies:

* Apocalpyse Now. Saw the 12:00 midnight uncut at Hoyts Regent in Brisbane and walked out white as a ghost, when a movies does that to me it's good because it made me sit bareknuckled in my seat and think.

• Stalingrad (the german version SBS play everynow and then, way better than the Hollywood copy "Enemy at the Gates".

• Saving Private Ryan

Mini series: Band of Brothers.

Dam busters is a good movie and don' forget to look out for some of John Wayne war pictures, you can pick them up pretty cheaply and some of his war pictures were ok. although strictly American.

Not a movie SS but years ago a TV show called Combat was about Vic Morrow and Robert Stack I think was the other star

I haven't been able to find Combat on DVD's have been told it airs on Fox but not seen it.

If you keen on military check out the War Museum's web site http://www.awm.gov.au/ they have heaps of stuff.

There are many good books around also

Then of course there is Cadets http://www.aac.adfc.gov.au/default.asp http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-army-today/military_cadets.htm

and living where you do you at the centre of a few good museums Singleton and Williamtown Airbase.

Here is an emotional, opinionated and gritty account of the story of survival on a whaler from the sinking of the HMAS Armidale. Well worth the read. HMAS Armidale a survivor’s story. (http://www.gunplot.net/sheeanarmidale/armidalesurvivor.htm) A 5,500 word personal account by Rex Pullen.

Then there is this account (http://www.navyhistory.org.au/the-loss-of-hmas-armidale/) of the same incident, from John Sullivan. It’s interesting comparing the two accounts.

Pacific. It's not out yet. Thery're making it just down the road. Gunfire, bombs, jap soldiers everywhere. So I've seen bits of it, but not on the screen.
The Combat series was great in its day.

I'll second Stalingrad..... fantastic movie.

If you are into books, the "War Classic" series, introduced by Weary Dunlop are all books written by the participants... very, very good and one of them is about a coastwatcher in New Guinea... had his 17th or 18th birthday out in the scrub while spying on the Japanese.
Not too sure if you are a reader though.

Tora, Tora, Tora was another worth watching as well. Not to mention Kokoda. I didn't mind Letter from Iwo Jima and on lighter side The odd angry shot is worth seeing as well.

In May of nineteen forty-one the war had just begun
The Germans had the biggest ship that had the biggest guns
The Bismark was the fastest ship that ever sailed the seas
On her deck were guns as big as steers and shells as big as trees

Out of the cold and foggy night came the British ship the Hood
And ev'ry British seaman, he knew and understood
They had to sink the Bismark, the terror of the sea
Stop those guns as big as steers and those shells as big as trees

We'll find that German battleship that's makin' such a fuss
We gotta sink the Bismark ;cause the world depends on us
Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around
When we find the Bismark we gotta cut her down

The Hood found the Bismark and on that fatal day
The Bismark started firin' fifteen miles away
"We gotta sink the Bismark" was the battle sound
But when the smoke had cleared away, the mighty Hood went down

For six long days and weary nights they tried to find her trail
Churchill told the people "Put ev'ry ship a-sail
'Cause somewhere on that ocean I know she's gotta be
We gotta sink the Bismark to the bottom of the sea"

We'll find that German battleship that's makin' such a fuss
We gotta sink the Bismark ;cause the world depends on us
Hit the decks a-runnin' boys and spin those guns around
When we find the Bismark we gotta cut her down

The fog was gone the seventh day and they saw the mornin' sun
Ten hours away from homeland the Bismark made its run
The admiral of the British fleet said "Turn those bows around
We found that German battleship and we're gonna cut her down"

The British guns were aimed and the shells were comin' fast
The first shell hit the Bismark, they knew she couldn't last
That mighty German battleship is just a memory
"Sink the Bismark" was the battle cry that shook the seven seas

We found that German battleship was makin' such a fuss
We had to sink the Bismark 'cause the world depends on us
We hit the deck a-runnin' and we spun those guns around
Yeah, we found the mighty Bismark and then we cut her down

Written by Tillman Franks and Johnny Horton
Inspired by the 1960 film Sink the Bismarck! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054310/)

PH I Read the first line as its sung :D:rolleyes: gee's haven't heard that one for a while

there was another also

Had and uncle who was in the army on board a ship somewhere in WWII all hands on deck was called to witch even soldiers took part he was handing the gunner shells to place in the guns but wasn't told about recoil shock he had bent down to pick up the next shell turned around to be blasted with it knocked flat on his rear. from that day tilll he died he never had a hair on his body never shaved reckons barbers glared at him. Toupe makers saw him coming tho he used to have ginger hair had to get so stung him badly.
