What to do With Old Carpet

Hi Everyone,

Carpet guys are coming in 2 weeks to lay nice new carpet and we have 70m2 of the nice old 80's beige carpet to get rid of.

Does anyone know of any recycling use that you can get out of the carpet instead of sending it to the tip?

I cut mine into pieces to fit and use it as disposable dog bed cover.

Took our old carpet to the tip except for the bits I cut up for floor mats in my old ute.

Try selling it for cheap in the trading post or similar, people often want secondhand carpet for bungalows, offices, etc. Depends how stuffed it is too, I guess.

I use old carpet cut into mats in front of my workbenches, and have a couple of extra bits around to protect pieces I work on, especially with concrete floors.
Ute tray floors are OK until they get wet and go stinky...outdoor carpet is much better for that
Dog beds I've made by stapling old carpet to pallets (the ones with filled-in tops).
Also good for kids cubby house floor too.

There is a crowd here in Melbourne that buys old carpets to resell. I can;'t remember their name for the life of me. I suspect the carpet would need to be in pretty good condition though.MAybe see if there is anyone in the yellow pages that deals in second hand carpets.

Just did a google search, and there are a number of such places around Australia.Just after a quick look they mostly seem to be dealing with commercial carpets.Do a search for yourself and you might find something near you.

Put it on ebay.

I had really, really, really, bad carpet in my lounge / dining which I cut up into manageable pieces and put under the house for future disposal. I then ripped out the bedroom carpet and figured the tip fees were going to be about $20.

I put it on ebay and someone bought the lot (including the under house rubbish) for $5. They got a bargain (so they said) and it saved me a trip to the tip and $20. Plus it was an environmentally friendly option. Everyone wins :U

I agree with scooter, got second hand carpet in one of dad workshops, stops the cold coming up from the concrete, and softer to stand on for long periods. If it gets dirty, who cares its shed carpet...:2tsup:

I'd agree with this. It would be multipurpose, protect your tools if they get dropped.
Could make a soft top for your workbench to protect the timber.
A couple of layers where you usually work would be real nice on the feet as well.

Personally, If it was me that had that much carpet to play with, I would , if I had an enclosed verandah, carpet that, line the boot of my car with it to protect the original carpet, maybe get some edged up into different size mats around the house, nail a couple of layers in the dog kennel, and use it outside in the backyard as weed mat/ path in the veggie garden.
