Have had a Tile Fire (Combustion Heater) in our home for over thirty years. Always a problem to keep the glass door clean. The wood resins would fuse onto the inside of the glass and it would take a lot of scrubing and scouring to get it off. Then about 2 years ago we tried Oven Cleaner and it worked pretty good except the smell was powerfull and you had to be carefull if it got on your hands. At the start of winter this year I was looking on the internet to see if the wood ash was any good to put on the garden. Then there it was - the answer to my troubles - "Use a damp rag, dip it into the fine ash and rub on the dirty glass panel"
Perfect Job - nothing but water and ash and sparkling clean glass. If you wait long enough your problems will be solved. Hope this is of use to you.
P.S - anybody got got ideas like these? Tell us about them and put us out of our misery.

We don't even use water or a rag. Just wood ash and a scrunched up newspaper, magic!

Just be aware, the reason you have to be careful of the oven cleaners, is that many of them contain caustic soda.

Wood ash contains a certain amount of caustic soda and caustic potash, so is in fact the same thing.

The original way of making soap was to combine fat with lye extracted from wood ash, in other words caustic.

You may notice that when you use your method, the wet rag feels slippery. Be sure to rinse your hands off well to get rid of this after using.

I have always found that a very hot fire will burn it off.

Same here, when it's starts getting dirty I get some nice dry Yellowbox and crank it up and end up with a clean glass :2tsup:
