Hey Guys. Some of you will remember me, some obviously not. When I was on last there were almost less posts than what there are subsections on here. Quite a variety and I'm sure its still the best forum on the net for woodies.
Now to my question: Ages ago I got a link to a site about a guy who had a complete woodworking workshop in his double garage. All his machines, workbenches, cabinets etc were on castors and could be easily moved up against the walls for parking his cars. There was a video clip on the site if my memory serves me right.I searched my butt off on here but just cannot locate it.
I would appreciate it very much if anyone can help.
Thanks

Hi Mate,
Thanks for the welcome. MMMMMM what have I been up to? First off, without delving into the past, there was just too much crud, couldn't be bothered with it. I'm sure you guys will know what I mean. Seems like its sorted now. Work, selling gear, running turning classes, all of which is work, playing with CNC together with Rodm whom you guys all know. He has been keeping the forum up to date with our adventures, although they were mostly his adventures.
Its a bit of a bugger when your hobby becomes your work, then one seems to look for other things to occupy the free time with. :o
Healthwise I've been going very well , still have my funny vision, deafness and am receiving treatment for my back at the pain clinic, BUT Hey, lifes great! At this point in time it seems like the 2nd cancer op in 2004 did the trick. Heres hoping! LOL.
How are things your way mate and sorry to hear about Mrs Mick?
Thanks again for the reply

Geesh, that goes back 11 years. I believe the 18 official ethnic groups excluding English & Afrikaans all have their language classified as official. Damn it was a waste of money having 2 in days gone bye, imagine printing 20 on official documents and signs!

Thanks for the welcome. I believe a lot of info has been passed through here in the time I have been absent and I hope I'll be able to contribute, but the best thing is that newbies and old pharts al learn from each other. I nver underestimate newbies because sometimes their fresh look at things find new solutions which we have missed and sometimes we are too set in our ways to notice new things.
I'll try and be on more regularly especially as I have a laptop now which means I dont have to be at the desk to use it, but I hate the thing. Somehow the LCD type screen is not good for my eyes at all and I find them difficult to read even after trying just about every possible setting. My personal emails are all typed in font size of either 14 or 16 and in Arial Bold. Maybe I should turn the scren on its side!

Any news from the " Vaderland " ? ( Oooops )

You are a CHAMPION! Thats the file I've been looking for and the video off the site is good enough.
I have to do something about my chaotic shed and just needed to refresh my memory with some tips. No point in spending time reinventing some of the things already covered in the post. Mine is not for a double garage but for a 6 m x 9 m shed, but the principle still applies.
Thanks again!

Well buggar me dead!! Old Joe!! How the blazes are you mate? I seem to miss you everytime Im up at Carbetex  I did see you at the show but well you were talking quite animatedly with a sheila and I thought Id best leave you to it... Mind you I saw ol Les as well but well... mmm the sheilas seemed to have taken all you Carbetex blokes attention whenever I wandered past!! :U

Ive just a couple of weeks ago spent a bit of $$$ at Carbetex and one of the things I got was 5 sets of those corner bases that you just add the wood to? $49 each... what Im going to do is cut and weld 2mm steel (same thickness as the corner peices) instead of wood of the required size to the angles.

These will go under the 10HB TS, the 18in Bandsaw, the 8in jointer and the 15in thicknesser, the spare set will be for the "whenever the heck I get time to make it" Router table.. I believe the steel inserts instead of the timber will make it a) stronger b) less likely to flex c) able to hold heavier weights than the stated 150kl thats on the box.

I didnt think I would need it when I put the shed up (same 9 x 6 size) but mate Im well beyond having room to phart in there... so the ONLY way is to put the machines on bases having just bought a mig welder I thought this was the best way to go.

I was up visiting with Derek Cohen a few months back and he has made his own out of rather large chunks of timber and from what he said they worked brilliantly and hes got a rather HEAVY looking old table saw! :2tsup:

Anyway mate its good to see you back and hopefully you will be a frequent visitor again... hey!! have you had a chance to make another harp? that one you made before was stunning... OH!! and by the way with the veneering if you remember I asked you about it before I flew out that time? Ive forgotten the blokes name you suggested I get hold of! But well as we all do when things happen we sort it as best we can and just adapt :2tsup:

But it is good to see you mate

So cheers
Shane

I have that FWW - in fact, I think it wasn't much more than a single garage. I don't have the publication handly but it was probably 2005 or 2006. I will look for it on the weekend.

What a fantastic set up, I hadn't seen that before so I'm certainly pleased you asked the question Joe :2tsup: (sorry I'm new member, wasn't around when you were here).

Now can anyone tell me how to save that video onto the computer ? ??

I will see if I can find the video file and get back to you. I have an idea I can transfer it directly to your computer if you wish. There is new software out now to do this sort of thing.

Hi Shane, thanks for the welcome. eah did see you at the other end of the showroom but was a hectic day, especially if theres a 'fairer sex' around . One then needs to give lots of attention mate. Lol. Noted on your proposed mobile bases. I used 30 mm RHS instead of timber for the base that supports my bandsaw.

Yeah Murray it may be more but I only ever saw what the link has about the Double Garage.
Bob it's really a good idea . I really like the fact that he uses some tool starage cabinets as in and out feed tables.
I have a number of books on shed layout, most use shelves inbetween cabinets. I realy dont like shelves as they collect clutter, sawdust, dust etc and are impossible to cean unless the tools are removed. Any shelves in my future shed will be covered with doors in a toolcabinet. I'm thinking that toolcabinets against the walls, above machine heights may be the answer. I'm hoping to use very slender cabinets with hinged doors of the same depth. That way one can store gear in the doors and it effectively doubles the wall space. Another idea would be to mount two smaller machines on flipover tops on some cabinets, ie a 12 1/2" thicknesser on top of the cabinet and another unit ie a scroll saw on the other. Just flip the top to use one or the other. Small machines like grinders can be mounted on one side of a flip over top, enabling one to use the other face as a in/out feed table.
The above are just some of my thoughts, any other ideas are most welcome. Let the ideas flow in guys!

gatiep, I did something along those lines a little while ago, I had a thicknesser and sander on a dual purpose (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=45656&highlight=dual+purpose) stand.

Worked very well, but I have since bought a bigger thicknesser and sold the GMC one, I have yet to mount my scrollsaw in its' place.

Most of my machines, including the table saw, are on mobile bases.

Thanks

I have a two car garage and almost everything is mobile. I can pull in either the wife's car or my 18' boat. I'm getting ready to build a new mobile base for the drum sander that has some drawers for additional storage. Outfeed tables are from Woodpecker and fold up to hang from the wall.

I like the mobile aspect, but every time I visit my brother's shop I envy having the table saw in a fixed position. I end up having to tune mine 3 or 4 times a year, he almost never has to worry about it.

Hey Joe.

I too have periods of inactivity on these boards and people come and go, some I miss and some, well, you know what I mean.
You, old son, are one of those we missed.
It seems these forums have almost outgrown woodwork, per se. They now cover everything that is worth doing.
There is no getting away permanently, unless you are really naughty and spit the dummy and get banned. But even then you can reinvent yourself, ey stoppers?
But, to the point
Welcome back

Thanks for the welcome etc mate. The board woudn't allow me to post even when logged in. Maybe it has forgotten me :; Must admit it's been a while.

To all the others that responded: Thank you guys.

Well done with boat and car BigShed.

Mini have you had any luck with the file you were trying to convert for me?

Have fun guys
