Trimming vinyl wrap panel

The last trim panel (vinyl wrapped) and I got a bit lazy. It's not square. I will need to take off 2mm or so along a short edge. Can this be done?

I suspect that once I cut through the vinyl, it'd be susceptable to shrinkage and pulling away? Correct?

not sure but I reckon a new panel may be necessary depending how visible the defect will be

I had one about 5 months ago that I split down the centre lengthways and then planed two mm off the entire length on the side (so panel was 16mm wide instead of 18mm (if this makes sense) so far no shrinkage or loss of coverage. Will see how it goes but I reckon if it was going to delaminate it would have by now.

The thermolaminating process is such that the vinyl is heated to make it soft then glued down to the door using a vacuum process and so on....

The point here is that vinyl applied in this manner does not behave like shrink wrap - the surface finish shouldn't really be in any major tension, so if you need to remove some board, the vinyl should stay in place.

What planing that board WILL do is create a fresh surface for moisture to enter and eventually swell your board, assuming that it is MRMDF, so you might want to seal your new edge with some silicone or similar.
