water over oil?

Hello All
A friend sent me an article from U.S. woodworking book which described putting water based finish over oil. Claims water based finishes have come a long way, the article talked about linseed oil, I was considering using wattyl crystal clear over tung oil.
Would this work??

Mate I honestly don't know why not go to the wattyl web page and ask them , then hold them responsible when it dosen't work cause I don't think it will
or try a test piece and check out the results
Please post the results as i for one would be interested

I would be very surprised if you would get a satifactory result by putting any water based finish over oil. The two don't mix, once you oil the surface it makes it very difficult for other types of finish to stick to it. I'm sure you could get it to go over the surface and dry but adhesion would be a problem.

Usually you oil or wax a surface to stop anything else sticking to it. they preserve the timber and repel water and other possible contaminates. ( dirt, tomato sauce etc)

The general rule is only apply a finish which has the same solvent that can be used in the oil. For linseed oil thats turps, so you can put turps based finishes over it. If turps dissolves tung oil ok then the same products would work but the whole idea of tung oil is to eliminate the use of varnish type finishes.

No problem at all, robjob.
Just make sure the oil is dry. I've used Crystalac over linseed oil a few times (oil to "pop" the grain). Left the oil to dry for a week and gave it a light rub with 0000 steel wool.

I must be getting foggy-brained. You do not use steel wool with water-based finishes. Probability of rust specks.
A light rub with 400 grit sandpaper is what I should have said
And I should have said boiled linseed oil..
