painting tiles sort of

Hi all. Got my long list of things to do and thinking of adding one. My bathroom has what I call indecisive tiles on the floor, they can't figure out if they want to be a real colour when they grow up :) They are a non descript washed out blue like the old 60s wall colours. There's nothing wrong with them aside from the appearance.

I don't mind retiling but won't get around to something like that for a couple of years since its the only bathroom and uni likes to get in the way. I'm thinking of doing something highly experimental instead........ nothing ventured nothing gained right. If it turns out terribly I'm only a few hundred dollars and a weekend worse off. I realise you can paint ceramic tiles with the right primer. Mine are non glazed which helps a bit too.

The problem with painting seems to be that the paint wears with foot traffic. So instead of paint that will wear poorly I was going to install a stained concrete sealer over the top. :)

there's a pic of his finish at the end. Its just a tough clear coat that can be stained too. The stain is a bit opaque so I'll probably just darken the blue right up or make it green. This stuff should handle bare foot traffic beautifully and look pretty special. Plus its good value. It will keep the tile pattern.


It is non toxic and applied with a roller etc.

Just a thought... any comments? Am I thinking outside the box or just being a dumb dumb :)

I used the White Knight tile paint on our toilet floor just before we moved in, and, almost two years later, it still looks pretty good.

I'm not sure if being a toilet floor is easier or harder than being a bathroom floor (unless your toilet is in the bathroom, of course), but it managed to deal with shoes and SWMBOs high heels ok. We were in the lucky position of being able to leave it for a week to fully harden before we moved in though, and it was only bare feet and socks allowed initially.

A word of warning about the white knight system though. The primer is acrylic, which is fine, but you can imagine my surprise when, after I finished applying the top coat, that it was, in fact, oil based...

I was thinking about doing mine wi9th a two pac epoxy paint. I recon that the epoxy would be indestructable.

yep the epoxy you would think would be super tough. Can you get attractive colours though or just industry grey :no:

Acrylic liner seems feasible too, like a tubliner. These guys do it

Never seen it in the flesh though. They reckon 800 - 1000 for my 3sqm though, I reckon I could pay for a tiler to retile for that :) Not sure you could or should diy that stuff either :wink:
