Nats thread gave me the idea http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?p=567176#post567176

Throughtout our lives we come across some famous people, not through being invited to meet them or backstage passes etc, just in situations right place right time sort of thing.

My first famous person walking to shops in Hurstville one quiet sunday morning Jack Brabahm and his sons early 62-63 he had his car out cleaning it yep race one stayed and talked for a while must have looked odd 7yr old with mouth wide open and eyes bullging in awe.

Opened car door for GG back in the 60's when in Boy's Brigade major thing at Sydney Show Ground.

LBJ & wife American stand in president on tour to Sydney was in cavalcade behind his wife wanted photo's of mymate and the rest of us dressed in USA Uncle Sam globber.

Handed silver shovel to poitician (don't recall who may have been Gough) who planted tree at primary school (should have swung it at his head)

Swedish Prince Gustaff when he came into kitchen to meet kitchen staff.

Mr Maroney Police commissioner when I almost run over his footwith wheelchair he wasn't watching where he was walking at Hawksbury Show 2005

Peter Paul & Mary mates place.

1960's Johnny Farnham he was performing at Roselands Raindrop Fountain and need to water the horse I had just been (must have had that look of relief on my face) he held up his show for 15 minutes.

Olivier Newton John in studio prior Grease

John farnham yes again same studio he was working his way into replace Glen Shorrok (spelling???)

Mark Latham 1st time he was 9 yrs old little shyte then picked fight at local pool he got turfed out, 2nd time he got caught doing something he shouldn't 11 yrs he got banned for life from same pool unfortunatley i was witness and woman pointed me out, 3rd time caught up in fight in streeet with some of his high school mates.

Colin Bond & Peter Brock before they were sponsored by Holden it was on the plate Peter was with his then wife the weather girl. They were driving past a mate and I who were walking to Oran Park they stopped and offered us a lift opened the doors of the race cars on the trailers, both wives went nuts cops everywhere needless to say didn't get in. (ps mate had broken leg and crutches at the time), years later at Agquip Colin again.

None of these were planned all spontanious.

Well, I don't want to brag, but I have shared the stage with Frankie J Holden (not his real name) and he has been to my house!!

(Should I admit that?) (Especially since I bag him as often as I can).

I've also met Noni Hazlehurst! Hmm, not getting better is it?

I've had beers (I think they were beers) with Kevin Borich after a gig. More credibility there. Also met various muso types back stage when I used to play a lot of supports - Mondo Rock, Eurogliders, Phil Manning & Matt Taylor, Party Girls!

I met Ben Elton and the three guys from The Doug Anthony All Stars.

I went to school with Warren Brown (cartoonist) before he became famous. Does that count?

George Gregan has served me coffee :) (Clutching at straws now)...

I've been in the lift with Peter Costello, and that National Party bloke who always wore a hat (mental blank).

I've spoken to Gai Waterhouse on the phone!

He doesn't drive an FJ though, he drives an EH station wagon. :)

Yes, Tim Fisher and there was another pollie with him, they were both in the news at the time. Used to work in the same building where little Johnny has his Sydney office. I walked out of the lift one morning to get my coffee and all these lights and cameras were pointing straight at me. Very unnerving and a bit deflating when they all look so disappointed. Johnny always came and went by the private lift to the carpark underneath.

Had half an hour of Paul Keeting's time back when he was still measuring up Hawke for a dagger. Shared a delightful hour seated next to Alexander Downer once:rolleyes:

Exchanged pleasantries with General Cosgrove, flirted with Felicity Kennet before I knew who she was (1991?). Got in a pissing contest with Jeff moments later. Didn't know who he was at the time either.:-

Met the deputy premier of the USSR back in '85, had a fun night with the Stasi in East Berlin in late '89 (but I can assure you that their hearts weren't in it by then-I just got deported, unbruised)

I have met HRH on three occasions. I don't think she remembers. Once gave Princess Dianna a smarmy wink while in Ottawa. She seemed unmoved.

Had a boozy afternoon once in Dublin with a co-worker. His kid and some of his friends joined us. My co-worker was named Clayton, and his kid was Adam, the mate was Bono somebody or other. There was at some point a ferocious headbutt launched in someone's direction, and much merriment. Did I mention the booze?

There are a few more local celebrities, too close to home to comment:oo:

When I first saw this thread I thought "I haven't come across anyone famous". But when I thought about it ....

I've been in a meeting with Barry Jones (it was at Uni and I was the postgrad rep)

Had a yarn with Slim Dusty at a rodeo in Mt Isa

Had a yarn with Dawn Fraser at the North Queensland games

Occasionally said hello to Rob Hulls as he jogged past my house

Talked with Peter Carey while he signed a book (doesn't count I suppose)

I'm sure there's more, but oddly enough, it doesn't really mean anything to me. The only person I'd really like to meet is Leonardo da Vinci, and he's long gone.

Went fly fishing for a few years with John Waters, and played pool once with Mel Gibson at a pub in Yackandandah, except I didn't know who he was at the time.
Also played a game of snooker with the late Eddie Charlton for $50,000:00, cost me $10 to play with proceeds to the RCH, I got the break and he finished the game.
I might add too that John Waters is a civil engineer I know, not the actor:p

SWMBO is the queen of meeting celebs

Mark Philippoussis helped her break into her car

She bailed up Pauline Hanson and interrogated her in the bathroom at Doyles during a boozy business lunch

she has served drinks to Alice Cooper amongst others (including Sir Elton),but apparently Mr Cooper was the nicest.

She has procured visa's for Fifty Cent and Snoop Dog (the first time)

She met Amanda Vanstone while she was Immigration minister....Ms Vanstone had actually heard of her. SWMBO was pretty chuffed about that.

Well, I don't want to brag, but I have shared the stage with Frankie J Holden (not his real name) and he has been to my house!!

And I think Frankie J Holden is actually a distant cousin of hers aswell....she has only met him once though when she was young, at big family reunion

Just to mention a few she has told me about...

cheers

P.S. I also have a Frankie J story.....He yelled at me and some mates for doing something we probably shouldna been doin.............drivin a hovercraft in a carapark :D

In Mt Isa I once had a friend named John Minogue. He was from Melbourne and he had me absolutely convinced that he was Kylie's cousin. I told a range of people this interesting fact, and it became known far and wide that John was related to Kylie (and quite close to her according to what he told me). I actually reached the stage of jokingly introducing him to people as "Kylie's cousin, John".

When he returned after a holiday in Melbourne, I asked him if he'd managed to catch up with Kylie.

"Kylie who? he asked.

"Your cousin Kylie, you idiot", I replied.

He roared with laughter: "You didn't believe that crap did you? I've never met her in my life!"

When I was fresh of my basic RO course got a posting over to WA (96). One of the PT's heard I could play footy and had a contact at Subiaco. So I went along knowing nothing of WA footy. Gary Buckenara was the coach (yeah I had heard of him I guess). Running around the paddock thinking he looks familiar, and he looks familiar, and he looks familiar. They were all the Eagles players. Was awesome running around training with guys like Mckenna, Matera, Kemp :2tsup:

I once had a job in Perth setting up sound equipment for functions around town. One of my jobs each week was setting up the mikes for Perth's footy show (in some pub). Each week I'd go back to collect the gear and I'd occasionally have casual chats with whoever was around.

The trouble was, I was from Sydney and didn't know of any Aussie rules players. I was sharing a unit with a few people from Melbourne, and I used to annoy the hell out of them by pointing to people on the TV news saying: "I was talking to that bloke today, who's he?"

Apparently they were famous, but to me thgey could have been people who worked at the pub. For example, I told them that I had a joke with this young Aboriginal guy who had a bunch of flowers and was waiting for a taxi outside the pub. "Someone's trying to get out of trouble" I said to him as I loaded the van. My friends that night told me that he was one of the Cracker brothers. :- It just goes to show how shallow the whole fame thing is.

That's right. :) It didn't do much for me at the time either. It was a strange situation, though, being surrounded by "famous" sports stars and not knowing it. And when you don't know it, they look so ordinary.

Have shaken the hand of Ferdinand Marcos. Related by marriage to Mark Latham and Grant McBride. Had a beer and a smoke with Ernie Dingo when I "starred" on one of his early shows. Was in the same high school class as Chook Fowler. Lived across the road from Terry Lamb's father in law, can still remember the hangovers when Terry visited for a BBQ. Tim Flannery is a cousin. Christopher Dale Flannery is no relation, nor is Justice Flannery.

Does this include famous failures? I met John Howard in Hyde Park, Sydney during his first term in office, and I had a loaded gun. And an extra 6 bullets.

Other famous types: Christopher Lee - asked me how to get to the 'Entertainment Centre' in Sydney - he really does SPEAK IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

Yahoo & Mrs. Serious, during pre-production of Reckless Kelly they came round to my home with the art staff to try on some armour.

When I was working at the Easter Show (Sydney) I was handed an autograph book as 'lost property'. As I was 'back stage' I got some of the 'Skyhooks' to sign it & returned it to the owner via the local police - a very happy girl with a book full of very interesting signatures - her dad was a TV manager type.
