All this discussion re your winter and summer temperatures makes me despondent.....

What type of federal government do you currently have?

Conservative?
Liberal?
Socialist?

Are you like England?
With counties.

Or like Canada?
With provinces.

Do you have a PM?
Or a president.

Totally sorry for the ignorance about your country.
We Canucks in TO can be pretty forgiving in relation to the US/
But I haven't been in anything resembling intimate contact with Australians in 23 years.
And your weather has me thinking.....

Thank you.

Howard

Howard,
First, you have probably posted in the wrong place so don't be suprised if this gets moved.

Can I suggest trying Wikipedia for most of the answers to your questions.

I have spent time in Toronto myself but as an Australian. In short, AU is very much like Canada, however Canada is far more liberal with it's laws, ie same sex mariage etc.

You also won't get away with speeding like you do in Toronto. Depending on the state your driving in, the tollerance is somewhere between 2km/h and 10km/h. :~

And as far as weather is concerned, when it is cold, it is cold. You still need to rug up when it's 10C just not quite as bad as -20C like it is comon on a clear Toronto winter day, and the brake pads for your handbrake don't freese to the drums on the car because they got wet driving to work (so you can't drive home until you defrost with a hair dryer)

The liberal govt is in power as a fedral govt. And our Prime Ministers name is John Howard or as every one calls him little johnny.

Are you like England?
With counties.
We have seven states which all have a labor gov in power
Then we have 100's of local councils or shires which are supposedly non political
Or like Canada?
With provinces.

Do you have a PM?
Or a president.
We have a prime minister for the fedral govt and premiers for the state govt and mayors for the councils or shires.

Totally sorry for the ignorance about your country.

In the winter our temperatures can vary by up to 25 degrees in the day. Can go down to minus 16 degrees celcius in the winter up to 45 degrees celcius in the summer.

Thank you.

We've got two major parties in Australia. The Liberal Party which is a misnomer as it is conservative and the Labor Party which is liberal. We do this to confuse you.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Grunt. I am always totally confused with politics that is why I never get involved with it including voting. That way I can never get blamed when a government fails to deliver on their hollow promises.

I notice that Barry White lives in Kentucky NSW. I drove through there just the other week. (no I wasn't lost). The drive from Armidale to Walcha via Kentucky and Walcha Road is just great and much more interesting than going through Uralla. Besides what's the rush to get to Walcha??BArry should know all about cold weather then. I notice lately it's been about -6 C up that way.

Her name was Sally - we met up in Jerusalem - she'd never seen snow before & danced around like a five-year-old - totally embarrasing for a snow weary Torontonian....

Theres not very many places in Oz where winter temperatures drop below 0 degrees Celsius.

We don't need snow ploughs to clear our streets and highways

Based on my exposure to this board and its various threads, I would say OZ is run completely by the local shires and has no Federal government to speak of. :D

[Much like the U.S.]

Had a canadian over here for 12 months on an exchange, we were all sooking about how cold it was in winter, he showed us a photo of a building fire where he came from, totally involved on the inside and solid white on the outside where the water was freezing as it hit the outside of the buillding, be a tad on the cold side for my liking.:D

Really? I thought they were the ones that send our countries to war. Are you one of those who think it's really the multinationals?:D

Nah. I was just referring to all the threads about What can I do? Do I need a permit? Why won't the council approve this? Can I subdivide my block?

No particular political viewpoint expressed or implied. :D

I spent a winter in Canada, mostly Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver Island. Totally cured me of the need to see snow again. If I remember correctly Trudeau was the PM and the politics looked the same as ours. We just had Hawke elected.

Wonderful people in Canada. Took a real liking to Molsen, Ice Hockey, Banff and the giant wooden penny at Sous Saint Marie,.
