View Full Version : We Need To Make A Stand

Now I'm sorry this isn't about woodwork but I think it's very important.
Why are we so concerned about climate change when there is another far worse problem staring us in the face? It’s on the streets, it’s in the media, it’s become part of our lives and we just let it continue to grow.
We have developed a society that is constantly bombarding us with hyper-sexualised images and messages. Women, especially young ones, are no longer viewed as full human being, deserving of our respect, but as sex objects, devoid of feelings. The media has us believe that things like sex before marriage, abortion etc. are a win/win situation. The reality is that they’re not. They only contribute to the growing number of eating-disorders, self-harm and depression in young and old women alike.
It is now, in the time of darkness, that we need to make stand. We can only make a difference if we are Silent No Longer.

Actually, let's take a stand against ALL religious nutters.
Oh yea, Men dominate religion, and often the status of women within those holy walls is still centuries worse off than where they are in general society. As a result, religion is the last place I'd look for inspiration on how to treat our womenfolk.

I am also sorry that this is not about woodwork and equally flippant.
I saw heaven standing open - the last person there forgot to lock up
and there before me was a white horse - obviously a reference to the horse with no name
whose rider is called Faithful and True. - this is just the most ridiculous name ever, what's his surname for crying out loud?
With justice he judges and makes war. - well of course, let's all pass a bit of judgement and start our own war
His eyes are like blazing fire, - stoned
and on his head are many crowns. - that would just look plain ridiculous
He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. - I thought his name was Faithful and True, what has he forgotten already? War does that I suppose
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, - Ever heard of OMO? Or maybe Nappisan for those stubborn stains
and his name is the Word of God. - Hold on, I thought his name was Faithful and True? and then no-one knew? Is this done by deed poll?
The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean - This is obviously a reference to psychiatric nurses

I've managed to scare away the Jehova's Witnesses; I've beaten the letterbox-droppers by threatening to beat the bejehovas out of them if they ever litter my box again; I've sooled the do-not-call registry on to the local real estate agent, and I've trapped sufficient stray cats to send Wongo to weight-watchers for a year. I'm just managing to get my environment to conform to my liking, when along comes a proselytising prude who considers it necessary to pollute my favourite woodwork site with his prattle and religious superstition.
I'm not going to argue with you. My religious and moral views, if I have any, are mine. I'll live by them, but I wont inflict them on someone else, and I'll thank you to show me the same respect.

I dont know about that...theists love to spout off about Darwinism, evolution etc, citing things like "irreducible complexity", "gaps in fossil records" and the like as a case for creationism. The problem is that you can never win.
It is pointless to debate with someone about whether or not their invisible friend is real. All the logic and science in the world wont help you. Their belief hinges upon their faith that he exists despite all evidence to the contrary, so it is an argument that cannot be won, because there is no way you can prove that he does not exist.
The creationists expend a lot of energy on debunking the theory of evolution and others. Even if they can come up with convincing proof that a theory is wrong, all that proves is that theory is wrong, it doesn't prove that their invisible friend exists.
So neither side of the argument can ever win (unless he comes down here and sets us straight). Therefore you're wasting your energy debating it.

On the other hand, the bigotry shown by many of the detractors on this thread never ceases to amaze me. I sometimes wonder if they express themselves so strongly because they are afraid that maybe there may be something in this "faith" business.
Read some of the responses objectively and ask who the zealots are.
Are they the one(s) who are promoting a particular line of religious thought?
Or are they the ones who so ferociously want those stamped out?
The bottom line to me is that in this country I have a right to believe as I wish, and I respect the fact that others believe differently, but I am bemused by the intolerance of the bigots on both sides! Just what are they afraid of?

Very well said. I think its the anonymity of an internet forum that makes us all a little more prone to forget our usual social manners from time to time.... At the end of the day I normally keep my religious opinions to myself, each to their own and all that......However this lad/lady demanded a call to action because in his/her words
"The media has us believe that things like sex before marriage, abortion etc. are a win/win situation. The reality is that they’re not. They only contribute to the growing number of eating-disorders, self-harm and depression".
Which in itself is, I believe, an outrageous display of bigotry. And therefore opened him/her up for merciless ridicule. And ergo rather than stick the slipper into the "call to arms" I chose to mock the ridiculous signature. This is nothing I wouldn't say to someone face to face, if they served up the same sort of emotive tripe as this one did. I mean how many people do you know walk around prefacing everything they say with a quote from Revelations?

I am reading it too. Also bought The Ancestor's Tale and am sort of reading them in parallel. What I don't get is how supremely educated people can take completely different positions (putting the Pope one side and Dawkins the other). I mean, logically, they can't both be correct and the evidence for a billion years of evolution seems more compelling than the men on the white horses.... Perhaps it is a case of a bob each way (don't mean you, Hon. Bob) but religion sure has a lot to answer for, including in my case a lot of Sunday mornings.....

A bigot is a prejudiced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice) person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own.
This raises an interesting point. Who decides who the bigots are, and when does that person then fit the description of being a bigot themselves?
What I'm getting at is, bitingmidge suggests some of the detractors of FC's initial post are bigots, but in so doing he himself displays a level of intolerance towards those detractors. (no midge, I'm not calling you a bigot :D )
Ultimately, we are all potential bigots, even the most broad minded of us have a limit. At some point, the 'disagree but respect your right' position runs out of legs...

I disagree this debate is a waste of energy. The above info is one example of why I think this is so.
IMO religion gets a little to much quiet respect. Whats wrong with asking questions ? and debating the answers you are given ?
I also dont see how respectful debate is against the rules.
you will not use this Bulletin Board to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law

Their belief hinges upon their faith that he exists despite all evidence to the contrary, so it is an argument that cannot be won, because there is no way you can prove that he does not exist.
why is it pointless ?...Your right there is no conclusive proof that a creationist God does not exist, any scientist will agree...based on scientific evidence. However the scientific evidence that is available suggests that the case for evolution is a lot more probable. That is worth debating I think, especially imagining what the consequences would be if every part of daily life was infiltrated by religion :o . As an atheist I could imagine I personally would be in a bit of trouble if that were to ever happen. While Europe (and you could maybe include Australia) is becoming incresingly secular, You only need to look at the US or the middle east to see examples of how pervasive and powerful a force religion is.
Debate raises consciousness and I think that that fact means it is never a waste of energy.

That was a blasphemous movie and yer'll all get struck down:o But the response to the mis-heard statement re the meek inheriting the earth wasn't bad.... "The Greeks; what'd the Greeks ever do for us..." Is this a tangent?

It's pointless because you are never going to convince a believer that they are wrong to believe.
why not people are free to change their minds....I used to believe in Santa :p .
Discussing religion on this forum is frowned upon, as you will no doubt find out if this keeps going much longer
That is my point about too much quiet respect. Its not just this forum, the same applies pretty much anywhere. Im not saying people cant believe or shouldnt be allowed to believe, I would just stand up for the right to debate belief.
I find your atheist stance every bit as illogical
how exactly ?
cheers

too much quiet respect
It's not so much that religion is given too much respect (in fact it's quite the opposite I reckon) it's that the debates inevitably become heated and it all comes down to a person's right to believe what they want. I'm all for it personally, I agree 100% that too much religious interference in day to day life is a bad thing.
how exactly ?
Because an atheist has no more proof that god does not exist (or is dead) than a theist does that he exists (or is alive). So making absolute statements one way or the other without proof is, to me, illogical. It's like saying "there is/is not life on other planets" rather than "there could be life on other planets".

I'm confused. Is there life on other planets or not?
Don't theoretise (new word?) this time, Darren. Just a simple answer. Life on other planets: Yes or No?

Life on other planets: Yes or No?
The answer is maybe. We will never have a definitive 'No'. We might have a definitive 'Yes'.

OK, well let us know how you go with your evangelism
edit: I dont think evangelism is the correct word to decribe my argument I have said nothing in relation to the the gospel and its teachings.
I prefer to think of it as consciousness raising...as I said before
It's not so much that religion is given too much respect (in fact it's quite the opposite I reckon) it's that the debates inevitably become heated and it all comes down to a person's right to believe what they want. I'm all for it personally, I agree 100% that too much religious interference in day to day life is a bad thing.
with that point Im not debating a persons right to belief in anything....just (as I have already said ) the right to debate and question that belief. Examples can be given where religion does get preferential treatment.
debates inevitably become heated
that applies to anything, its not just religion specific as we have seen from the great sharpening debate  . I certainly have no intention of becoming heated :) . Its all just in good fun
Because an atheist has no more proof that god does not exist (or is dead) than a theist does that he exists (or is alive). So making absolute statements one way or the other without proof is, to me, illogical. ".
Proof is such a finite word....I prefer evidence. It might be symantics to some, but in my argument it is important. I never said I have proof that god does not exist...I said evidence points too or is more on the side of, ie more probable that he doesnt. As an agnostic you sit on the fence, as a confessed athiest I stand on the side of the fence that currently has the most evidence. When or if the evidence swings the other way I will believe in a creationist god. My beliefs are by no means what could be called fundamentaly athiest....I have already admitted that by saying I agree there is no conclusive proof god does not exist, without that proof I cant definitivley say there is no god, I believe no one can
It's like saying "there is/is not life on other planets" rather than "there could be life on other planets
On that point I am agnostic :D
who said religion cant be argued logically

Then you are a 'weak atheist' which is more like an agnostic than a 'strong atheist'. A strong atheist denies the existence of god/s.
Evidence is not proof. You cannot say this is because I have evidence. You can use the evidence to attempt to prove or disprove your hypothesis. There is evidence for god, there is evidence against. I find the evidence against more compelling but there is no proof (nor do I believe there ever can be). You can call that sitting on the fence if you want, but I wont be compelled to make a decision one way or the other.

IMO religion gets a little to much quiet respect. Whats wrong with asking questions ? and debating the answers you are given ?
I also dont see how respectful debate is against the rules.
'Snot the debate that's against the rules. It's the subject matter that ruffles a few feathers.
