I'm planning on pulling up the existing deck around my inground pool (it's rotting etc) and replacing it. The pool is a 15 x 5 metre rectangle ingound concrete one. I want to put a low level deck around it about 2 foot wide all the way around.

Is there anyone who can tell me how to work out how many L/Metres of timber I'll need for the decking, stumps and joists?

I'm not a builder by a long shot!! I want to be able to work out roughly the cost of materials so I don't get ripped off. I've been told that ironbark is good for decking around pools because it is very durable.

Get a quote first that specifies a design and materials schedule. Then go to http://buybuildingsupplies.com.au, look in the timber section for a guide price and go from there.

Why not go to school on your old deck for sizes/quantities?

I wish you luck, this is why most contractors quote standards and don't provide design drawings. It takes time, which is money, to draw up a deck design before costing it and I for one will not give clients a copy of my drawings. I will show them the drawings while we are discussing the quote but when I leave, so do the drawings. Too many people try getting contractors to quote on landscapes purely so they can take the ideas or plans and diy it.
