Here is a retaining wall, edging and arbour we built earlier this year.

Pic 1 - Start of the wall. We used 75 x 200 treated pine sleepers for the posts and wales.

Pic 2 - Starting to attach the wales. Where possible we screwed the wales to the post from the back, so that you couldn't see the screw heads.

Pic 3 - Shows all the wales attached.

Pic 4 - Shows the backfilling. We collected rocks from the paddock and filled the bulk of the area with those (will provide good drainage). We then topped that with the soil we excavated for the holes, etc.

Pic 5 - Shows the completed wall, edging and arbour. Note that we topped off again with "Black Mountain Gravel" which I think is generically known as decomposed granite. We just smoothed it off and let rain, traffic and time, compact and flatten it.

looks pretty good, not too shabby at all.
nice to see you cut the posts off with a slight angle.

nice to see you cut the posts off with a slight angle.

I even sealed the ends with Organoil seasoning oil - it's amazing how little cracking/splitting etc there was, compared to untreated ends.
