Hi all, I have a question about the ducted heating return at my place.

Currently our return is in the hall way in roughly in the centre of the house. The problem I have is the installers built a 600mm cube in the lounge room to feed the pipe into the hall way.

The lounge is an awkwardly shaped room already as there are 2 fireplaces in the room, and its almost impossible to work out a layout for the furniture in the room as a result its been empty for 7 years.

We (swmbo) have worked out out a suitable layout but it means moving the door the problem is the box is in the way! Would it be ok to remove the box and just have a floor grill in the lounge room for the return? Air flow into the room would be ok as the door opening is 1200mm wide.

Basically its just moving the return from one side of the wall to the other.
My gut is telling me it isnt ideally but would be ok, I would appreciate any idea's/feedback you guys may have.

we had a grille fitted to our 900mm duct and buried it under the stairs. The only issue we have had is it picks up lots of dust as it cannot be controlled unlike a dedicated box and filter screen.

Might mean you clean your ducts more often like we will have to.

Ok here is a quick drawing, the return is in the lounge but vented through the wall into the hallway. I was hoping to remove the box and replace it with a vent/grill on the floor in the lounge room... The main problem with the box is twice as big as it needs to be and its stopping the french doors from opening more than 90 degrees.

I cant really make the box much smaller becuase the hole was cut centrally in the box about 100mm from the walls (if that makes sense).
