Any good suggestions on what to do up there ?

Try not to get sun burnt. :D
When are you coming up?
I have to do an upgrade on an ATM there sometime soon, I can grab you a handful of brochures.
Reef & Rainforest are the important things to see.
How long are you staying?
Is it to be a quiet holiday or are you going to try to see the whole of FNQ in 3 days including all the adventure stuff?

Start here.
http://www.pddt.com.au/
You can do Low Isles & Mossman Gourge with the unwashed masses for a sample of the Reef & Rainforest.
There are heaps of restaraunts & they change all the time & I haven't stayed up there for about 3 years now.
When are you going?
If it is not in the next week, I can get you some info & post it down.

We did not particularly like PD - too much like the Gold Coast. Just made for tourists. The area around PD in interesting though. Like Cliff said, Mosman Gorge is quite nice, though popular with the tourist groups. Be prepared for the bus loads.

I've been looking at diiferent sites but 5 days isn't long so I think we'll just do the reef and the forest, then chill out for a couple of days.
Maybe I'll go fishing. That would be good.
I see it's Carnivale Time too. I hope it's not too noisy.

I love Port Douglas. Been several times.
Don't miss breakfast with the birds (http://www.rainforesthabitat.com.au/attractions.html). The birds are spectacular, and food is pretty good too.
Reef tours have gotten better, and there are several like the Quicksilver that go out a ways. Can't go there without seeing the reef of course.
Lots of rainforest tours and possibilities. Some of it easy (riding around in vans and boats), some more strenuous. Some lovely stuff up there, and I keep thinking what magnificent timber is all around you there.
The last time we went we noticed a definite improvement in quality of restaurants. Just wander around a bit and you'll have no trouble finding something nice and relaxing.
The fishing I did there was a bit disappointing. We only had a few hours, so ended up in a little skiff poking around the estuary. Interesting morning, lovely area, cool wildlife, saw a few crocs, snagged a ray, caught 1 small fish of some sort. Not a bad way to spend a morning, but not great fishing. Maybe it will be better when you're there.
I'm sure it will be lovely. BTW, mobile phones work fine there, internet connection can be a bit trickier. So just take your blackberry and do it all while she's shopping
Hope you have a great time, mate.

Good plan, Gina was in travel for 9 years & we got all sorts of free or cheap trips to various places & we soon learned to pick a couple of things & enjoy them rather than try to see the entire country in a 3 day weekend.
I see it's Carnivale Time too. I hope it's not too noisy.
I won't be much louder than normal but there will be more stuff happening which means there will be plenty of extra free stuff as well.
Unfortunately, that will mean that there are more tourists in town too.
The Sunday markets down in the park on the waterfront are not too bad compared to some of the other markets we have up here.
It is not far to the Daintree where you can do more of the Rainforest & eco stuff, wild life, birds, crocs etc... there are some river cruises & you can get a river fishing trip there. In the Daintree village there is (I think it is still there) a craft shop with plenty of the local feral wood work. Good for ideas at least.

Hey Gumby, if you don't want any yocals to know your a mexican, remember not to drink any water from the toilet bowl. We've heard mexicans do that. Theres plenty of water here, honest. We also have rain.
If Port Drugless, I mean Douglas, gets a bit boring, don't forget to check out the exciting Mossvegas, ahh, I mean Mossman ( http://www.mossvegas.com ) for some excitement. (But not after 5pm or on weekends, when its closed)
I'm off to Port tomorrow actualy. I suppose I should warn them your coming.
You'll have a good time here, theres plenty to do and see, just make sure you get out of Port, and just use it as your base and for afternoon drinks and dinner.
If you have any questions about the place, or what you'd like to do while your here, fire away and I'll see what I can find out.

There are a lot of little country towns in the area around PD. Real people actually live in them. I find those types of towns a lot more interesting than PD type places. But maybe that's just me. :D
I could be biased though, as I was born in Cairns descended from a couple of families that had been there since the 1800's. If you're going to go fishing, do it on the reef if you can. The fishing's better and the things you'll catch taste a whole lot better than most things you'll catch in an estuary....

When I lived up in Cairns (approx 7 years - 1997-2004) the best part of going to PD was the drive up. Really nice scenery on a beautiful clear day if you are thinking of hiring a car. Look out for the Palm trees that apparently that DH Christopher Skase planted on the long drive into PD when he was develping up there (can't think of the name of the road but it is the main drag into PD from the CC HWY) apparently they cost $1,000 each, maybe a furfy, maybe Cliff can shed more light on this.

Yeap, Skasey put them & a few other things into PD... some of the locals there reckon he made PD what it is today.
I don't know what they cost but the rumour is that he (or the person given the project) couldn't find big mature palms so they bought an oil palm plantation & relocated them.
I reckon it is more likely to have cost about a $1000 each to move them.

Poppa, our fathers probably knew each other. My father worked at Tate tin mines in the 1930s and I still have his and his brother's RAOB lodge certificates from Julatten. It's possible Alex, but my Dad was born in 1940. More likely that my Grandfather knew your father. Dad's father's family owned Curraghmore cattle station many moons ago (there is a creek on the property with our family name), and when Dad was a boy it was owned by his mother's family up until the late 1940's. Might not be called that anymore.... My grandfather was a shop keeper in Julatten I think, and when they moved to Cairns he became a life assurance agent (one of the old-fashioned ones that helped people a lot), and serviced all of the country areas in the far north that he knew so well. When I was a young boy my Dad joined the same life assurance company and we used to drive to Coen once a year to the races, where Dad would catch up with customers and old mates from his youth. Amazing to look back on it now. My Dad's Mum has her picture in the Herberton museum - her netball team is pictured (I have a photo of this).
If your family has a history up there you (or your family) might also know my other grandfather - Dr Charles Knott. For many years he delivered most of the population of the area and was the only surgeon for miles around. He practiced in Cairns into his 70's and died in the 1980's, after a long and (very!) colourful life.
Anyway, sorry for the thread highjack - I'll stop now.:-
And Cliff - no.

I'll be arriving mid morning & the job will take an hour or 2 so I'll stay for lunch. :shhh:
Diary is marked. 'Avoid Central Hotel Monday'. :D

If you feel like a day's drive through the Atherton Tablelands you could try the Tolga Woodworks

:D We are going for 5 nights.
I'm under strict instructions.
1. No contact with or from work.
2. No contact with or from this forum
3. No internet access
4. No mobile phone
Other than that, I open to suggestions. :)
She wants a complete relaxing time, nice restaurants, buffet breakfast, tours, cruises, sightseeing stuff.
(while she's doing that, I'll be at a loose end :D )
Play some golf go out see the reef, try going in a glass bottom boat or snorkelling/scuba swimming on the reef. Go and do some fishing there is plenty of good fishing up that way.

Didn't see a woodwork shop there, but on the high side of the main drag, on a corner at the eastern end, there's an art gallery that had a couple of nice pieces of woodwork when I was there a year ago.
Or you could just go to the Central Hotel for lunch, & see if Cliff wood work.
And this Pierre? Sounds like a bit of a chap.:;

I wooden count on it. :D
I was supposed to pick up the parts in Cairns last night & they were there so I'll have to go back to Cairns Monday Morning to get them.... lunch might be a bit late now

Don't know. The road runs uphill from the main drag, and you go into the gallery from the side street - it's above the shop on the corner.

yeah well, we're a wake-up to all these false alarms.
I'm sure I saw a placticine man on the esplanade at Mooloolaba this morning, and I checked with the airline, and there was definitely a seat 6F on the plane coming in yesterday! I reckon he's been laying down a carefully prepared smoke trail! :oo:

Gumby,
This is not good enough; we need to know whether there are still any sand dunes left in Port Douglas; whether you saw a crocodile or a cassowary; whether you were seasick on the way out to the reef, and so on.

I was seasick ON the reef ! :(
I went scuba diving and barfed 20 feet below the surface. Mate, that's not a pretty site but at least I took the regulator out first. :-
We did the all tourist things.
Croc farm (just me 'cos she hates crocs).
Sky rail and train ride back.
Daintree Tour inc a private walk through virgin forest at Noah's Creek (private property and untouched)
Cape Tribulation (why would you bother - its was wet and windy)
Outer Reef on Aristocat (see above :() but the reef is magnificent and the fish :2tsup:
Fabulous accommodation, right at the end of the main street and opposite the beach. That meant we could just walk around the corner and we were in town but it was nice and quiet there too. In fact it's a great time to go, just before peak season. All the tours were only about 50% booked so we had lots of room to move around etc.
Bacon and eggs every morning, restaurant and a bottle of wine every night, warm but cloudy, what more could you want. It was great.
We were on the reef all day Monday so didn't get a chance to catch Cliff unfortunately (or not, as the case may be :D)

Not really. It rained every night but only for the last day and a half during the day. Not too bad, although we couldn't see much coming down on the train. It was cloud all the way.

No, it's a young person's place. Although I think there must have been a Willy Nelson look-a-like competition going on somewhere. :D Maybe it was part of Carnivale week.

Nautilus was really nice but not cheap. We set a match to $260
The Combine Club is pretty good for a cheap feed. I liked 'On the Inlet'. Nice food.
I think the best value for money and really nice food was at Zeus. I had the best baby octopus there...yum.

Actually, while I was there, I found out that cane toads are spreading south. But what they don't say is that joggers are spreading north. I saw one as far north as Mossman. :((

Have you ever noticed how it is easier to run over something with the right side wheel rather than the left side wheel?
Why is that? :D
