Serious Warning to all Parents!!!

Last night the little wood butcher (3) somehow procured some of swmbo's medication. He came into the lounge holding the open bottle with a tablet on his hand. We didn't know for certain if he took any but he may have. Swmbo had the joy of rushing him to hospital where he was forced fed a charcoal solution and kept in overnight for obversations. Thankfully he is fine and now home, the doctor says that since he was admitted so soon after it happened and was given treatment the tablets didn't have a chance to get into his system.

Please go and make sure that all of your medication and chemicals are securely stored!

We thought we had everything secure but we now have to recheck everything cause obviously it wasn't secure enough.:(

Also huge thanks to Rufflyrustic who went out of her way to give me a lift to the hospital to take the boy and swmbo some clothes for their stay (swmbo had taken the car and mine had a flat battery:(()

Very glad that worked out well in the end! Scary!

Hopefully all the "attention" will make him a bit more circumspect in mucking about where he shouldn't.

Fortunately no kids here other than the fur kids now so that does indeed make life a bit simpler :-).

We still have the "kid proof" latches on the doors to cabinets and some drawers, with the clever fur kids they still have value :-)!

The frustrating thing is though, that if you wanted him to take tablets instead on messy syrup he is unlikely to swallow them.:~

Good to hear that the little guy is OK.

When child proof caps for drug bottles first came out my oldest son was 5. SWMBO was "female dog'ing" <FEMALE dog?ing>about the new style cap. My son picked up the drug bottle with the safety cap and within 5 seconds had it open. :p

Pleased to hear all is well again, this has to be a worry to all parents during the early years, you can not anticipate their actions, they seem to be happy and occupied but in a flash something like this can happen.

WB I am sure you and SWMBO suffered more than bub in this instance :)

We have a 2.5yo boy who is into everything and we keep the stuff behind childproof latches but occassionally the teenager has had a crisis that required a bandaid and as such the cupboard left open - I reassure her if she is even bleeding profusely she MUST resecure the door (which means just close it!!) or else :(( !!!

Wonderful to hear yours is a good outcome and a timely lesson for all - including grandparents of visiting little persons :wink:

Dont trust other's 'safety' either. My wee feller was very inquisitve. 3 mins after assurances that there was 'nothing in the house that could hurt him' he came around the corner sucking at a window cleaner bottle! No harm done, bout their kid just wasn't as inquisitive.

Well the boys fine. Missus and I are the feeling like crap due to lack of sleep. Still can't work out how the bugger got the tablets. He would be a good cat burgler cause he left no evidence of the crime.

The bottle is supposedly tamper proof but it doesn't take much to open it. Doesn't matter as we have gone through the house and relocated the medication somewhere well out of reach. (I can get it but swmbo almost needs a step ladder:D)

Pediatric Doc told swmbo that it occurs very regularly. He would see at least two cases a week and there would be 5 times more that would go to the public hospital. That is what prompted me to post the message. It is a big problem that people don't think about until it is too late (like us:()

Couple of hopefully un-neded stories here.

'Child Proof' containers - according to legend, these are tested by being made of clear material, filled with sweets and thrown into a class of kindy kids - if more than a certain precentage (30% - 70%?) are unopened after an hour, the design 'passed'. Adults have more trouble opening the bottles than the kids.

2 friends have some serious medication/chemicals in the house - one family keep mum's 'headache pills' in the safe with dad's pistols (stuff that can cause spontaneous amputation of body parts).

Another friend bought a 2nd hand stainless steel switch housing (900x600x150) with a key lock (his business was opposite a large scrap yard) which he then mounted on an outside wall about 6 feet (1800) above the ground after welding fine stainless mesh over the cable holes.

One pill to REALLY watchout for are Mum's Iron supplement pills - attractive colour & cause a very high percentage of serious/fatal child poisonings. Most people don't think of them as particularly dangerous, after all its just iron like you get from red meat - but the quantity in one pill causes serious problems in a child sized body.

Glad junior wood butcher is OK. And kudos to Wendy for being johnny-on-the-spot. Makes me think - we've got all of our medicines in a cupboard about 7 feet off the ground with no climbing points within reach. But SWMBO's mother (who lives with us - unfortunately!) takes what to kids would be life-threatening medication. God only knows where she keeps them. If brains were dynamite she wouldn't blow her nose, but you can't say anything because she gets snarky. I know - I'll be in the doghouse for a week after tonight! Boy did she get a serve - dropped the little one on her head from 18 inches up. Bloody idiot. Then it was my fault of course. I hate this. Wish I was kidding....:(
