Black Japan

What sort of hard epoxy type filler will allow me to Japan after it dries.

I need a bond that will be hard yet can be sanded and will later take up sealers and finishes.

What do you guys recommend?

Rare as it is no-one has offered a suggestion yet.
My dog has chewed through the legs of a nested set of tables (probably Maple).
They are antiques so I can't just throw em away, but I want to repair by perhaps filling with an epoxy or other hard filler that can later be painted/stained/oiled.
The two part epoxy stuff doesn't seem to absorb stains.
What do I do?

I doubt any of the epoxies absorb stuff once set. If you add a filler to them, then they obviously would if the filler is absorbent.

No other suggestions, I see you already blame the dog which is wise.

I would look at the West System site (http://www.westsystem.com/) - these were the guys that led the use of epoxies in boatbuilding and if there is a way to do something with epoxy, I suspect they've tried it.....

I suspect that if you want the grain to show through, it is going to be really hard to do anything. But if you want a hard, durable, opaque finish, that shoudl be doable.

You can use normal body filler, its meant to take paint over it and is a lot easier to sand than epoxy. It will repair timber perfectly.

If you are actually using Black japanand need a solid finish, prime with a suitable primer first and then apply the black till you get the finish OK.

If it needs the grain to show through it can be done but there is no point going into that unless thats the case.
