Battery Operated Sensor Lighting

Hi,

I have been to Bunnings and Mitre 10 the past couple of days in the hope of purchasing battery operated sensor lights but to no avail. There were only two sorts available at both venues, those being electrical & solar.

Is it possible to get battery operated ones here in Australia or I will have to either get an electrician in at least $100+parts or solar $80+.

Thanks for highlighting that NCArcher.

They are for the garden areas (both the back & front) and they are to be mounted on house. I just really want them as a form of security. In that anyone coming up the path (of a night time) will trigger the sensor to switch on the light(s).

The solar lights should be DIY, and run on 6 or 12 volts, so it should not be too hard to solder in a lead & make o your own battery backup - after all that is what they are - a battery, a light, a charger/solar cell and the passive detector all in a box.

I think you can get 12 volt passive IR detectors from places like Jaycar for burglar alarms, so even if you can't get a satisfactory solar unit, you should bew able to knock something together from bits that runs off a 12 volt power supply with a 12 volt car light.

I just saw an interesting unit at the local 'Reject Shop' chain outlet. It is a 2 spotlight unit with PIR & it is wired up to plug into an ordinary power socket - either a wall socket or a power cord. My be worth a look.

Arlec have (or had) a unit that plugged into an existing bayonet fitting, I also have one in the garage that is pre wired and plugs into a power point.
The warehouse have psuedo stainless steel LED units that just sit in the ground and come on at dark and charge during the day, about $5 each but don't throw much light.
