View Full Version : Ghost posts in iSpy

I've noticed several times now that a post will appear in iSpy but then when you follow the link it's nowhere to be seen in the thread. Am I right that these are posts that have been deleted by the poster (or a mod) after iSpy updates but before I've followed the link?

Silent, 95% of these would be posts deleted by the original posters. Quite often they change their mind or realise it is in the wrong forum and move it. Mods generally only jump on posts that fast if they are crude or spam (which you won't see anyway).

Thought as much. They actually stay there (in iSpy) for quite awhile, even after they have been deleted. Of course you can see some of what has been written and once or twice I've wondered why the poster (or a mod) would have deleted them as they have seemed innocuous enough.

Thanks...

Thanks...I should add that iSpy actually causes a lot of this to happen. Since it is a live refresh, a number of people will see a new post and decide to respond to it. Two will answer within a minute, then when they post they notice another person has beat them to it, so they delete their post.

(it just happened to Wood Butcher and I, check iSpy before it goes)

Just another of the perils of the information age :)

You can always refresh the iSpy page (use the refresh button)

Also possible that the posts are by a newbie who has to be moderated before the post can be viewad by members and the general public.

This moderation can sometimes take a number of hours depending on whether or not a moderator is on line. We can't be watching 24 hrs a day although some people think we are.

There's a hell of a lot of posts to wade through and keep an eye on.

The idea of moderation of new members is to keep the ratbag spammers and opporators off the forums. All new members are moderated for their first half dozen posts to make sure they are genuine and not bots who are programmed to spam forums.

A number of forums owners have closed their sites because they couldn't keep up with the amount of spam that comes in every day from these scumbags. Until we implimented a very strict scanning of new members we would sometimes receive as many as 35 or more new spammers signing up via bots every day.

We now have it down to a couple a week at the most.

Sorry about the rambling rant. I've said my piece. Back to getting ready for Tas WoodShow, we set up tomorrow.

Cheers - Neil :)

BTW I like iSpy. I just leave it running and have a look every now and then. I can see straight away if I'm interested in the post. Very handy feature.

Cheers.

Especially if one is trying to keep an eye on certain drivelous threads at the end of the week;)

Yes. I would say that thread lowers the GDP contribution to a negative figure in Fridays!
