White haze

Just a quickie.

I have finished off a piece with a few coats of intergrain tung oil and I now have a glossy finish which I would like to soften somehow. I have tried (on an offcut) cutting the finish back with 1200 wet and dry which makes the finish smooth and silky however there is a whitish haze which is left over. I'd like soften the finish and get rid of the haze. Any suggestions or techniques would be greatly appreciated.

The piece is a dining table which may not be suited to a wax finish.(?) Or maybe it is.

hi mario, im no expert but the whitish haze sounds like it is the scratch marks left over fromthe wet/dry paper! did you use the paper after the finish had dried? if so put another coat of oil on and while it is still wet use the paper then wipe off the excess & you should still get the silky smooth feel , also use a sanding cork or block when doing this. if you leave it like this , this finish isnt totally water proof so you will have to keep re plenishing the oil coat every once and a while.

Thanks for that, I believe you may be correct about the haze. It is after it is dry and from using the 1200 wet and dry. I will try what you have suggested but was also thinking of just cutting it back with the wet and dry and just applying a matt finish polyurethane (or similar.) after to dull it a little.

hi mario,
i use danish oil all the time and never get a gloss finish until i buff with wax. never tried intergrain though (is that a brand name?)
if your going to cut it back again then you will have to use some form of liquid to do it so why not put on another coat of oil.
you could also try 0000 grade steel wool does a good job finishing and doesnt leave a white haze.
