I'm wondering if anyone has seen/done built ins that actually look good in a room that has picture rails? All the ones I have seen have wardrobe doors that are either under or over the height of the picture rails and usually dont go to the ceiling and quite frankly, it looks plain dorky.

Has anyone seen this done welll? I would love to see pictures or a link if you know of any? Also, if no pictures are available can anyone tell me what they would do a.) go with 2 lots of doors, one lot to the height of the picture rail and another storage door up the top above the rail with a section of wood in between carring the picture rail type thing around the room? or b) just go up to the picture rail and leave above it empty (with no cap to the ceiling, just using a top lip thingy (i know that has a name but i cant remember it for the life of me) to top it off ... anyone able to advise me on what would look decent bearing in mind the rooms are quite small ...
Thanks!

A

PS. Also, what doors suit an art deco era place?

To start with these are just my opinions I am not an interior architect.

I wouldn't try to run the picture rail over the inbuilts they would not have a use or a sense of place.
You can carry the horizontal reference line of the picture rails through the inbuilts by having the spacer between the bottom and top cupboard at the same height.
As far as Deco style cupboard doors go, you have quite a bit of latitude there it depends on the reno your doing and the amount of reference material in the room or the rest of the house.
Sometimes all you need is a reference to Deco style as true Deco can be quite heavy and dark with bookmarked veneers etc and carved surrounds.

These can be expensive to faithfully reproduce it depends on what you are willing to spend. Personally I would prefer to go simple and light and let your furnishings create the ambience.

oh totally, I didnt mean the actual rail sticking out, the spacer was what i meant... yeah, cost is a big factor :) so wasnt intending geting repro's done just didnt want to head down the aweful line of mirrored sliding doors which would absolutely clash ... so just normal doors with some sort of square type patern you think? The room will be painted light so I was thinking I would either paint them myself or get them in white ... this is the only picture i have found that i like ... but alas, i cant see the top... would love to know what they have done ...

looks like they may have just gone to the picture rail line from that glimpse in the crn.

That would look good but as I live in a small house I'm always trying to maximise storage area.
I would do the same style doors above with a pull up hinge arrangement - good place for storing suitcases and travel bags.

On the basis that the most basic sliding mirrored door built ins for the areas in question would be $600 each, what do you reckon something fancy shmancy like in the picture would cost with 2 levels of doors?

I would think that for less than $2500 you would get your doors and internal carcasses - say with some drawers built and various hanging spaces by a firm that specialise in inbuilts. I got some done in the kids room for $1200 with three sliding full length mirror doors about 5 years ago.
