If sometimes you think the forums are running a bit slower than usual, this could be part of the reason why.

Just copied these statistics for Woodwork Forums from our stat counter: They are for January 2007.

I had to put some ,'s in to make it more readable16,272,289 - that's over, Sixteen and a quarter MILLION hits in one month.

Sixteen MILLION, two hundred and seventy-two thousand, two hundred and eighty-nine hits for January 2007 :o

Compared to having no hits on the forum at all I guess.

Do we need a compared to?

Can't we just say WOW and leave it at that !

Average of around half a million hits a day, pretty bloody impressive I'd say.
Jeez Neil, it must be costing you a packet in bandwidth to keep us amused and off the streets :- , thanks:)

Amazing stats Neil, and well worth a WOW!!

Personally, I thing the really stunning stat, is the 224,507 unique visitors. You got nearly a quarter of a million different people to the site, in one month. That is absolutely Stunning.

We host some websites of 16 or so companies. Combined they don't get the same number of hits or download rates that this site does.

Hey Neil, does you stats counter separate the drivel from the rest?

What is the % of posts to hits?

I dont understand these stats. Half a mill a day look, but bugger all post?
What is the % of posts to hits?

Well, IIRC from my webstat days, the unique visitors can be taken as the actual number of people looking in over a given month. Every page viewed is a separate hit. With 1,6M hits, the rough math is 6 or 7 pages viewed by each visitor on average. But we know that many of us view a lot more pages, so some are viewing only 1.

Some get here by accident, doing a search, the forum comes up and they look in out of curiosity. Others come only to look for an answer to a specific problem, find it, and move on. Then, there are the lurkers, enjoying the information but not posting for various reasons (the chief of which is, I suspect, fear of looking an ass in public :p ).

That leaves the rest of us, who apparently don't care if we look an ass in public. ( I offer, for illustration, the Friday Thread.:D  ) I, for one, read a great many more threads than I post in, trying to learn techniques new to me and to which I have nothing of value to contribute as yet (if ever).

I daresay the posts per hit ratio on the forum would be considered quite good, given all that.

The potential here is what staggers me.
With 16 million hits, I still tell woodies about this great forum and they look at me blankly and say they have never heard of it.

Neill,
That is a phenomenal result.
Notice how there are always more each mid-week day than any weekend.
How many at work are viewing, when they could be involved in "work"?
I hope these hits are also reflected in benefitting u-beaut, too.

[SIZE=4][B]Compared to????

What compared to?

It must be the scientist in me that says a single number means less that a number with some comparisons. A few useful comparisons would be
- Same time last year, two years ago etc (demonstrating rate of growth)
- Compared to other WW sites. Just how far in front is the WWF?
- Compared to other large trade or hobby sites.

I'm not trying to put this forum down in any way. I think this is a FANTASTIC site, :2tsup: :2tsup: :2tsup: the information is incredibly useful, the response rate is fast and furious, the threads generally stay on track, the admins do a superb job, and the degree of anarchy, freedom of speech and nonsense is about right for me, but IMHO adding by comparative data I think the stats will be even more impressive than without.

Compared to having no hits on the forum at all I guess.

Do we need a compared to?

It depends what you are trying to do. Some of the big forums/sites publish their comparative data on their sites. It's pretty obvious they are doing this to generate PR attract advertizers.

On a personal side the stats are great but when I talk to woodies most have still not heard about this site and proceed to tell me about their favourite MDF (YAWN!) website. When I tell them about WWF they yawn and think it's just like their site. I'd just like to be able to say something more definitive (eg this site receives more hits than the next 4 ww sites put together!) about this being the best WW site.

I hope you can take this as a constructive opinion.

Cheers

A very interesting site to visit is Alexa.com. It allows visitors to track website traffic and make interesting comparisons, eg you can track 1, 3, 6 monthly data etc. It's not for the faint hearted but most UBWWF people would be numerate enought to follow the data and logic involved.

For example, the image posted below shows the % of people (I suspect that is IP addresses?) reached on the internet (which is a better indicator that the absolute number of visitors) by UBWWF (in blue) in comparison with some other international WWF websites. The red line is for a well known US forum that has clearly gone down hill in the last few months. On this score UBWWF is clearly holding its own because as the number of internet users increase (especially in non english speaking countries) you would naturally expect to see a drop in % of people accessing websites.

Alexa shows UBWWF last week rated in the top 250,000 of all websites in the world as compared to the "well known US WW forum" which was only in the top 600,000 sites last week. More importantly UBWWF has gone up 5000 places in the last 6 months. By way of another comparison a well know international DIY website rated in the top 25,000 sites last week (BTW this site includes all manner of art, craft and basket weaving so it is not in itself a fair direct comparison).

On the Australian scene UBWWF currently ranks 8578 in term of traffic and only 42% of visitors are Aussies - we're a minority folks!

OK that's enough stats for one post.

Cheers

Given the vagaries and closeness of the stats for WW sites in the 8 - 12 rank (they are all in the 200,000 traffic range) I would probably say UBWWF is about equal 10th or so.

What's also significant is most WW sites in the 6 -11 rank are going backwards rapidly whereas UBWWF is going up.
