Jarrah boat finish

I received this email today and thought it would be worth seeing what response we get through the BB

I have just started working with jarrah as a replacement for teak while re-fitting my sail boat. (jarrah is about 1/3 the cost of teak here in the U.S.) I really enjoy working with this beautiful wood but have noticed that when I use a polyurethane finish I seem to be getting some of the oils from the wood coming through the finish. Any information you can provide on recommended finnishes for jarrah would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.. Tom Dew, Medford, Oregon

I told this gentleman to look in on the BB during this week for a variety of answers. I also said he should be prepared for the inevitable stupid one. Well we have had that one what about a bit of help or should we leave it all to Organoil and their new marine oil.

Come on people. You can't all still be on holidays. Can you?

Well Neil, I put on the thinking cap after you pointed out that we only had the smart A answers so far and my thoughts went down this track.
When they built the replica of the Bounty I believe they used a lot of Jarrah. In particular laminated beams etc. Anyway, I spent a while searching the "Bounty" on the net and couldn't find any info on deck finishes. I can tell you how long, wide, heavy etc but that won't help. But I did find out there is a boat building course in WA. They should be able to shed some light on the matter.

I have used Jarrah for all sorts of stuff except boats but I must say I've never had any trouble getting a finish to stick. Is it Jarrah or could it be Karri? Maybe Karri is a little harder to finish ????

I too use jarrah in my boat restoration work for both interior and exterior timber. To resolve the problem of a good finish staying put, I use a thinned epoxy rather than a varnish (sprayed) that can then have a standard furniture finish over it for the interior timber.

This seals the timber nicely and any other finish can be applied over the top provided it is roughed up a bit.

delamaree, can you elaborate? What type of epoxy? What thinner? How much thinner? Does it then spray like a lacquer or PU? How about clean-up of the spraying equipment?

What about the problem of mixing finishes? Can other solvents react with the epoxy base coat? (Almost sounds like you might be able to use thinned epoxy as a final finishing coat??)
