After Wongo's thread on water saving while brushing your teeth I figured we needed a post on water saving starting with the basics
so who is green enough to admit leaving it mellow when its yellow and only flushing it down when its brown

The extra amount of water I 'waste' by 1/2 flushing, is absolutely nothing compared to the amount of water I've discovered a washing machine uses each wash. Was horrified to discover just how much each load takes, although my garden is now a lot happier!

Depends on:
how full/empty my water tank is, which depends on:
how much/little rain we've had.
Generally I don't need to resort to not flushing, but when we first moved into our place we had a tank that was nearly empty, no rain for a long time and an inoperational bore pump so we had to be very tight with the water. Mostly I'm just careful with it and conscious of usage. I don't generally check the tank unless we've had more than a month with no rain.

Ta, up here we have HEAPS of water so we don't give a rat's ring. :-
We do realise that we are very, very lucky & we do have half flush dunnies.... we just press it twice 'cos we can. :D
We also have an all glass shower in the corner of the house & just stand in the shower for ages watching the world go by outside.... almost feeling guilty. :p

Mate, we have plenty of town water down this way in fact the council is boasting 'bout it. More to the point though, go outside n dig a hole or water a tree. Recycle ya wash water to the lawn or garden and bathe with environmental soap or without in a dam or river. Hell one can even wear ya clothes while ya swim as eventually ya skin goes all wrinkly anyway after a while in the water. It'll give the fish somethin to eat n fatten 'em up for when i go fishin again.:D

And by the way as i forgot to put in my other post, to save extra water in ya loo, put a house brick or a paver in ur toilet cistern.
Later,
Mark.

Our bogs are flushed with treated effluent, so I can flush a hundred times and the same water just goes around and around.

Mark,
tyhis might be okay in the older, 9 litre single flush or perhaps even the old 9/6 litre dual flush cistern and pan combinations but is no good for the newer 6/3 litre or less set ups. The newer systems use the minimum amount neccesary to clear waste from the pan, put a brick in the cistern to reduce it an people will end up flushing it twice, thus using more water anyway. You'll make a bigger reduction by switching from a top loader washing machine which uses 100 - 150 litres per load to a front loader which uses a fraction of that.

ALL of my grey water goes into an 8'x4'dia concrete culvert in the ground, this has been buried on its' end, a concrete bottom poured and a concrete lid on top. The outfall of my septic tank goes into it, in other words, ALL of my waste water. As I type this it is pumping out onto my vegie patch. Normally I would just water trees etc with it but since my bore dried up it is the only water I have for garden use. I shower with a bucket between my legs and that is used to flush the toilet.

use the lemon tree
I now have a diverter on the shower water going straight to the lemon tree. That means I can pee in the shower which saves going out in the cold at night. :D

Don't know how much of QLD news you foreigners get but there is talk about Brisvegas residents going on to level 5 restrictions (which by the way are nowhere near toowoomba's level 5). It was amazing how so many people were complaining about how unfair the restrictions were and some groups even mentioned suing the state government for compensation if level 5 comes in.
What a complete bunch of self centred fools. Yeah lets complain about not being able to have all the water you want. Keep it up and you'll run out!!

We're pretty serious here, especially when the tank is low. We have mains water but have only ever had to pay one water bill in four years. We still have to remind the kids that it is good manners to flush after a wee at other people's places!
Grey water goes onto trees and ornamentals, the lawn is otherwise allowed to get crispy in summer (less mowing - yay!) and bounces back with Autumn/winter rains. Which will arrive tomorrow, because today a lovely bunch of Tibetan Buddhist monks are doing a special sand mandala dissolution ceremony to bring blessings and rain to our region. (Also, the weather man said.)
We'll all be whingeing about the floods next week, no doubt.

Never heard of a garden trowel? You do need to watch your step when you have visitors who don't know how to "flush" with one though.
It's also a damned good incentive to weed out the thistles... :p

We are fortunate here in southern Tas. I have 4 tanks each holding 3500 gallons. We have nor problems with water. Buyinh the extrea 2 tanks about 3 years ago was a real good decision. Some folk down here with just one tank are buying water on a regular basis. I am also fortunate to have borewater avilable for my vegetable garden and other plants. We have a septic system and that waste goes to the front paddock which is always green and needs lots of mowing. You guys on the mainland have my sympathy. I do believe this drought is over and you should be back in the swim (so to speak) soon. However, I do believe we need to have a hard look at how we use water and what we use it on. Recycled water is OK. Europe has been using it for a long time and they are still around. The media and some s#$%t stirrers want to create devisions amongst us just be be smart alecks. We need to listen to real scientist to understand the value of recycled water. It is a finite reaource and needs to be managed well. And I don't mean for the profit of some. Costs do have to be covered but it should not be run on ther basis of the guy with the most money gets the water. You know what I mean.
