I hate the new smiley's.
I find them incredibly irritating.

But hey, that's just me. (where the hell is the poke out tongue thingy?)

I too find them annoying but then again I'm grumpy. (Which is much better than being Gumby)

I'm pleased that I don't know how to use them, apart from the one that fell into my signature.....and that probably took me two days!
I reckon we should say what we mean (smiley) (smirk) (tee hee)
Regards,
Noel

Well, the research I've seen says that in face to face communication, 55% of what is communicated is from physiology (smiling, body language, etc), 38% from tone of voice, and only 7% from the words themselves.

Had a contest with some friends once to see how many things we could communicate with just the word "mate".

So when we type in our words, we are cutting out 93% of our communication. That's why so many people take things the wrong way in emails (and forums).

I reckon anything we can use to improve that is a good thing. Sure the smily faces are a poor substitute for the real thing, but better than nothing.

But in respect of Craig B who started the thread, no smilies in this reply.

I don't mind the old smileys. As you say, they help convey meaning in a post so that people don't misconstrue your words.

It's the cutesy animated ones that I don't like.

People are free to use them of course. I'm just having a whinge 'cause I'm a grumpy old bugger. :D

:aargh: What is wrong with you people.
The only thing wrong with the new smiley's is less people get offended because they dont misinterpret whats beens said. I could say:-
Gumby your idiot!
Or I could say
Gunby your Idiot:((
Or
Gumby your idiot:hahaha:

And they are probably all correct at different times of the day:D

Grunt

I could say

'Gumby you're an idiot!' or
'Gumby you're an idiot!' or
'Gumby you're an idiot!' or
'Gumby you're an idiot!'

There is no chance that my meaning is be lost or misconstrued.

I must be a grumpy old bugger too for I can't stand these new childish smilies either, especially the animated ones.

I already have the avatars turned of because of the animated ones being a pain in the a**e, now I'll have to find out if I can disable the stupid animated smilies.:((

For some reason, in some posts the smilies for me don't show up as smilies, only text. Like

Anyone else 'suffering' from this?

Dear Wongo,
The red oil goes in the +tive terminal and the green one goes reeded side down, through a rcd over a coat of wax. Just watch out you don't catch ya fingers, if all else fails call a plumbertvrepairelectriciansurveyorengineer.:2tsup:

Did all that Baz. Only happens in some posts, with the old 'plain' ones. Unfortunately, I haven't had the problem with this thread.
