Does anyone know of a range hood system where the fan and motor unit are mounted external to the building, on top of the roof? I've found one example (http://www.prestigeappliances.com.au/images/appliances/rangehoods/silent-canopy.jpg)so far on the Web.
I believe this set up is far preferable to a recirculating type, or one that exhausts outside, as it removes both the fumes and the noise of the fan/motor from the kitchen area, especially an open plan style one.

Commercial ducting systems are often fitted with an all-in-one external duct/motor/chinamans hat. I think that they start for about 300mm dia piping though. Try a sheet metal shop that does industrial kitchens.

Have a look at SMEG - they used to do one (we have it), but I couldn't see it on their website when I looked just now.

One trick - make sure that the motor unit is mounted on something really rigid and preferably is acoustically insulated. The noise benefit is not as great as it should be if the idiot tradesman does as ours did and screws the unit to the top of a cupboard (maybe this post should alsobe in musical instruments!!!!).
