Hi Folks,

I have several large sets of bifold doors that I have installed and had assumed that I would finish / frame the inside of them as per all my other doors (with lambs tounge architrave all round). Now the other half is suggesting why am I going to cover the inside frame of the door and reckons don't put architraves on them at all so the question is how am I supposed to finish / frame them? If you refer to the attached quicj eamples I had proposed to do as per fig A (and rough plastered etc. to the edge of the frame) however the other half wants it as per fig C (plaster runs into door frame). I put in fig B as an option as that would still leave the wood frame visable and have the architraves to match the other doors in the house. Any one care to offer some opinions or advice?

Cheers

Tell your good lady that "A" is usually used as it's the quickest and easiest way of getting a neat job (and therefore the cheapest). "B" and "C" are both possible but are a lot harder to get really neat if there are any discrepancies (read "always"). If you want to go "B" you'l find that unless you put a bit of a "V" groove in the join between the jambs and architrave it will look like crap as there will be discrepancies between the wall and the jambs. If you want to go "C" you'll need to use a square set metal moulding to plaster to and this will give you a raised ridge around the frame. Unless you are (or get) a good plasterer it will look pretty ordinary. The other alternative is a shadow line moulding for the plaster, this will give you a small square recess between the timber and plaster and better hide any discrepancies. If all your other door and window openings have architrave then it would look better IMHO to keep them all the same.

There's no architraves on my bifold doors (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=37498). Just set reveals. In my case it looks better without them because there's a lot of timber around already. I've just finished them and I'll be writing up a detailed post with pics in the next couple of days.
