Looks like he'll hold his place for Perth.
If Watson comes in, who goes out? Martyn?

Martyn and The Hulkster, both gorn. Or should be but we all know how hard it is to get out of this team. A lot harder than getting in.

Bring in Jaques for barbecue boy. Jaques has only made about a million runs this season so that probably means they'll stay with Haydon.

So what's the young Clarke done before today? He always impresses me as an imposter, supposed to be a batsman, but averaging not much after a few more tests than you'd think.
As for changes, aren't you all forgetting this is a team game?

I think it's time to remind you of the opening post of this thread. There's no reason for any of you to feign shock horror or boredom, the outcome was fairly predictable before it started, although I admit, I didn't expect Ricky to go so cheaply.
Let's see now, Adelaide.... England bat first, score 600, Australia first innings: 700. Five days - draw!

You know I used to think the same thing about Ponting for his first 40/50 tests!!!
I think for the first 50 tests his average was about 40/45 and for the last fifty his average has been something like 70/80. Hopefully Clarke will take the same path, and once Hussey starts to improve his average we will really be getting somewhere. :D

M.E. Clarke, as you quite correctly pointed out, is a poser. Or is that posier?
I must confess, I had the same thoughts this arvo. I thought to m'self "Midge, I reckon you're watching a future captain of Australia here".
I suspect he'll do a Kim, flash in, then flash out(Beasley or Hughes, it doesn't matter) after all if he permed his hair he'd pass for one of Hughes' love children, and he's flash enough to be one. I reckon he could do a good sook on tele too every time the team lost.

Bah Humbug ..... Once the poms had made their runs I reckon the Aussies just went into batting practice mode.......
If you can't win it slow it down and use it for some practice is what I think went through Punters mind.

In an effort to divine the next Captain of Australia, I consulted the traditional Norse Runes last night. Initially they thought I was asking about Ice Hockey, but..
The answer is clear. Damien Martyn, as follows
Runes were spread and layed out in a line left to right as required.
Martyn becomes Phartyn which becomes Phartyng (some Danish there I think) which becomes Parting which becomes Ponting!!
The truth is irrefutable (ask Robert Palmer) There was some stuff about BBQ's and Japanese Electrical products, but I think these were just red herrings or rollmops.

I think there has been a lack of desire by both captains to create a winning situation.
Flintoff let his side bat on at a doddle, Ponting didn't get his guys to push on yesterday. The guy who did Gilchrist got a good score quickly. Mind you seeing the way the tail folded you can't criticise Punter that much. They did get to bowl at the poms a bit last night which was just as he should have wanted it.
I hope now that Ponting says lets all go to catching positions and who cares if they score runs. Put some pressure on them to score see if we can manufacture something. Poms likewise I hope they will decide that winning beats the heck out of blocking the ball out for 5 days and go after the win

5th December 2006, 09:29 AM
The Poms had to make sure they didn't lose another one, and they have done that, boring as it may be. They've improved remarkably...with help from the pitch, but at least the series remains alive. Its not meant to be a one day style slug fest, in fact I'd rather listen to 5 days of it than being all over in 3.
Hogarth has done well, best bowler in the conditions by far. I think McGraw has peaked way early and may just slide off the radar, but he does tend to soldier on. Warne has been ineffectual, the Poms have his measure. Does the fact that he plays in England regularly mean they have an advantage over him, by being exposed to his wiles?
I think some of the comments here about Hayden, Martyn and Langer may be on the money but talk of change in captaincy is a bit premature!Ponting will need to hang around for a bit to support a changing of the guard, but Hussey seems to have a pretty sensible head...could he lead? Thankfully Gilchrist has stepped up notch too. Who looks to be a successor to him as keeper?
Cheers:)

Not suggesting that you would change the Captaincy now. More like in about five years time when Punter retires.
As far as the wicketkeeping position goes, Haddin has been doing prety well in the Sheffield Shield (I just can't get used to calling it the Pura Cup).

I think there's a difference between cockiness and excitement, and this is after all what test match cricket is all about; the swinging pendulum.
At five fa, there is still a long way to go as well, and already barely enough overs for a side batting last to get the runs on the board.
England are still in a position where a draw is the best outcome for them, they are now batting to save the match. Hoggard could be knighted if he stays in for an hour this afternoon.

Studley,
I don’t see why they should risk it.
England gets 250-300 by 2.30pm (11 to 2.30 – break = 3 hours)
Australia chases 300 (2.30 to 7.00 ?? = 4.5 hours)
Doesn’t sound like a smart move does it?
A draw is the best possible outcome for them.

It seems like my winning rant was dissappeared by gremlins!
Well played I say, and the reason I love watching test cricket. These sorts of results come up every year or two despite the hyperbole of the moment and if I may hark back to a few enthusiastic comments by some commentators during the day...
Let's put this in perspective, this is NOT the greatest comeback after a side scored more than 550 in Adelaide in the first innings. If I may take you back a mere three years:
Day 1: Australia 400/5 (Ponting 176*, Gilchrist 9*; 90 overs)
Day 2: Australia 556, India 180/4 (Dravid 43*, Laxman 55*; 51 overs)
Day 3: India 477/7 (Dravid 199*, Kumble 1*; 143 overs)
Day 4: India 523, Australia 196, India 37/0 (Chopra 10*, Sehwag 25*; 10 overs
Result: India won by 4 wickets
Does that scoreline look familiar, or am I suffering from deja-vu again?
Them thar injuns could play cricket in them days! ;)
And a few enthusiastic comments by posters to this thread:
When Warne bowled in the first innings, he obviously kept the scoring rate down enough so that England were lulled into declaring even though they had a team still to bat.
The Australian team NEVER gave up, the English team NEVER played for a win and payed the price.
The last Ashes series was lost by two runs, England actually fought like an Australian team then, let's see if they've had the stuffing knocked out of them.
