Hi all,

I am a total newbie on this forum and to the world of woodworking!! We have just bought our first home and I have told my fella the only way his family 'heirloom' dining table is coming is if i can restain it!!! I have sanded it back from its old stain (It was a darker stain that threw off gold tones) I bought a "maple" satin stain today and tested it but it is still that orange goldie hue. Does anyone know of a stain that is like an Ash tone or is that even possible since the wood is not ash?? I need assistance before I destroy this table!!!!!! Thanks heaps all :p

No idea.com - Sounds like you already have destroyed the table. If it's as you say an heirloom then maybe you should have left it to someone who has some idea.com.

You may well have just made a valuable piece of furniture all but worthless.

None the less. What colour was the raw timber with all the stain removed and what colour when wet with water? Do you know what timber it is?

Maple as a rule is a pale cream colour, bordering on having the softest touch of pink. so what colour is the stain you have?

Is the colour of the table darker than the colour you want it to end up?

Cheers - Neil :)

mmm, I hope you have only done a test piece. Sounds like all you need to do is give it a good clean or perhaps use a furniture restorer/rejuvenator/cleaner type of product.

I also hope Neil is wrong, but I wouldn't put money on that.
