I have a water feature pump that is 24v,connected to a small 240v transformer, the question I have is do I have to switch power off to the transformer if the pump is not being used,as i want to have a separate inline switch for the pump and not have to go to the shed all the time to turn it on & off. Thanks dave.

I would be turning it off at the wall as transformers normally run hot and I would be worried about leaving it on all the time

When the supply to the pump is switched off but the transformer is still plugged in and live then there will still be a small amount of current drawn from the mains and some warming of the transformer due to core and resistance losses.

We do this all the time with phone charger plug packs where we leave them plugged in and occasionally put the phone on charge.
