Whats that all about ? ..did I hear that right ? ........ something on the TV that the Americans are banning it ? ..
I don't think I could live without the stuff personally. I mean, I'd feel all wierd, dressed in my suit, during my next business trip to New York, if I have to eat bloody pancakes with maple sirup every morning!!...,,,cold toast with heaps of butter and vegimite, and a cuppa...or nothing at all thankyou very much !!
Might have to smuggle in a dozern jars with me ,,,,, in my briefcase.

G'day Jake,
Let them ban it, they don't know what they're missing out on.
Maybe they've gone all politically correct because it's black and some sort of mumbo jumbo carp.

Theyre shooting themselves in the foot...Vegemite is made by Kraft, an American owned company. If they ban it then it'll mean less profits going back to yankeeland.

But you've got to remember its not Nabisco!! and, if you've ever tasted their Marmite, you'll understand that taste means nothing (Bring me more sugar!!)

Agree with you Wongo. I think in order to like it, you have to have been spoon fed the stuff as a baby. :p
Still, it's a bit harsh to ban it. I don't know any Americans who actually like it, so it really only affects the expat Aussies.
There are certainly products on the shelves in the US that taste bad (although arguably none taste as bad as vegemite;)) and certainly products on the shelves that are much worse for you than vegemite, so it seems a bit silly to ban the c--p, er, product because it contains (gasp) folate .

I see Big Macs and other cr*p junk food as more of a threat to the health of Americans than Vegemite. It shows the people in power have no idea of what theyre doing.

Out on an oil rig off coast of New Zealand at present. In the galley they have both Vegemite and Marmite. Had a quick check on the levels in the jars and they seem to be going through far more Marmite than Vegemite. Ive noticed quite a few of the Americans on board going for the Marmite rather than the Vegemite.

- don't really care what the Yanks do at their place :p:p[bit much that they are searching the Aussies for it though]:eek:
but what concerns me is that they influence others - ie I have travelled to Europe and taken Vegemite in the luggage for personal use :):)- even send it to rellies in Denmark :):):)- If they influence the others that it could be some sort of danger then we could all be in strife.:(:(:(

Must've missed something. What's the danger? Folate is good for you, isn't it?
silentC
23rd October 2006, 11:52 AM
I've just read that it's banned in the US because folic acid is only allowed in breads and cereals. So it's OK in bread and wheeties but not in vegemite.

Folate is Vitamin B9 and does no harm (I think) in moderation. Actually B9 is recommended for pregnant women.
Is, perhaps, the amount of folate present in Vegemite the problem??
I can't remember a time when I was without it in my diet.

A few interesting things from Wikipedia:
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III 1988-91) and the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (1994-96 CSFII) indicated that most adults did not consume adequate folate. However, the folic acid fortification program in the United States has increased folic acid content of commonly eaten foods such as cereals and grains, and as a result diets of most adults now provide recommended amounts of folate equivalents.
Folic acid is very important for all women who may become pregnant. Adequate folate intake during the periconceptional period, the time just before and just after a woman becomes pregnant, helps protect against a number of congenital malformations including neural tube defects. Neural tube defects result in malformations of the spine (spina bifida), skull, and brain (anencephaly).
The risk of toxicity from folic acid is low. The Institute of Medicine has established a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for folate of 1,000 µg for adult men and women, and a UL of 800 µg for pregnant and lactating (breast-feeding) women less than 18 years of age. Supplemental folic acid should not exceed the UL to prevent folic acid from masking symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.
In 1996, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published regulations requiring the addition of folic acid to enriched breads, cereals, flours, corn meals, pastas, rice, and other grain products.
Vegemite is banned in the USA, because it contains folate, a vitamin that in the USA is only allowed in breads and cereals. The USA government has (as of 2006) stepped up the ban, going so far to even search Australians for Vegemite when they enter the country
The greatest nation the world has ever seen.

When Oz rules the world, as the only nation that hasn't run out of energy resources, we can make the likes of Dubya and Donald Rumsfelt eat one vegemite sandwich daily as punishment for refusing to use the metric system.
Kiwigeo,
The stuff that they call marmite in Oz is vastly inferior to real marmite found in the UK. UK marmite can be found in boutique delis for Brits in the US, but I don't know whether it too contains folate.

Yes it does.
per 100g:
Folic Acid – 2500 µg – 1250 % RDA
I hope we don't find out that Marmite is not banned in the US. That could be a declaration of war. The wikipedia article on Marmite seems to indicate that it is, but that surely must be a mistake.

It just boggles my mind how a country such as the US with all the obesity problems that stem mainly from junk food, have the audacity to ban vegemite for personal consumption by searching Australians at the airport.

Here was I thinking that you had really become true blue, and now you ruin it all by saying that you hate vegemite. Surely, if I, as a pom born and bred, can mark my assimilation by switching my allegiance to vegemite from marmite, surely you can give up eating cats, and dogs for that matter, and eat vegemite with a good grace.

Maybe the American's noticed that Aussies are just brilliant people, happy cheerful good at sports intelligent resourceful independent minded and not only all that good looking too. So not wanting any of that they blamed it on Vegemite and banned it!
I am sure that it makes sense to a bureaucrat somewhere. Folic acid is in Vegemite well because it is in Vegemite. They add it to their bread and cereal? So what issue with Vegemite? Maybe they just don't want any option to the put it in bread thing? You'd have to be in the Government/bureaudracy and want to protect your little sacred cow I guess.
Vegemite banned (and I don't eat it myself but thats not the point) for containing something they think is so good they add it to their bread! And so few Americans eat Vegemite what is the point?

There's a market here for "Folate Depleted Vegemite"
- Gauranteed not to improve your health.
- Suitable for Ingestion during pregnancy without affecting your ability to litigate against Hospital, Pediatrician and allied health professionals.
- Ideally suited as a dare for students during Initiation procedures at College.
We'll keep the real stuff. Though, since its made by Kraft, this wont be in production very long.

Hey I have the answer...
Rip out all the folate, cos we all now know that it is the route of all evil, and replace it with a liberal helping of sugar and top it off with a copious application of fat and there you have it a PERFECT product for introduction into the worlds biggest consumer market!

I heard a grandson or such of Pharlap's handler reckons that arsenic was an ingredient in a tonic that was fed to the horse to aid performance.
