I have a piece of timber here, it is roughly 30x5x4cm.

Guess what it is, you may guess it straight away, or you may not.

Clues will follow.

Hve taken photos of all grain hotspots

If the photos arent good enough, I will update.

Happy guessing,

Photos are a bit small, but the far right of the second image, the figure (?) in it looks a bit like some I've seen in blackwattle, but the 4th image, the cranky grain reminds me more of bluegum. Dunno really.

Cheers

Joash,

Clearly your photography skills falls somewhat short of your turning skills.

How about focusing the camera and taking a polished close up of the flat and end grain?

Cheers

It's easy to recognise all the local species in your area. Especially when there's only a handful of 'em. ;)

I'm betting that any one of us friggin' eastern states mongrels could post pix of several dozen of our local timbers that'd have you scratching yer pointy little head. :D

Wild Dingo

I win??? Strike me roan eh? Not a bad guess for an ol phart!

Sooo whats me prize yer young gnome like nipperoo? ;)

Actually it wasnt soooooo hard you know... these east coast wallys coulda and shoulda picked it easy as

All they would need to do is go to the nipperoos website and look at the pics of his turned peices first one up is a MARRI one the timber looks sorta maybe a little kinda like those blurry ones the gnome like one posted! ;)

But still... a win is a win as they say! Soooo whaddid I win? :p

I still reckon it looks like wood.

I actually picked up a but of Marri in the shed tonight while I was out looking for something hard for Slow6 in our box swap, it wasn't spalted.

Auzzie turner
3rd October 2006, 11:49 PM
Only 30% of Marri has that spalting in it, that is the only reason you were able to find a piece in Queensland:D:D

I didn't find it in Qld, it wasn't lost....

I got it off an old bloke in Pemberton when I was there about 3 years ago.
