Had to go in yesterday to get some disc pads for the Landcrusher, decisions decisions, there are two Ferodo sets (DB1199) except that one set finished with Z ($49) and the others with WD ($59).
I head up to the trade counter where I am confronted by a spotty little herbert who tells me that the WD is specifically designed for the 4WD version of the Landcruiser and the Z is for the 2WD.
I was stunned, didn't even have a smartasre comment for this one, might check out ebay though and see if I can find a rare 2WD crusher.
Called Ferodo thismorning and they tell me that the 'Z' is their economy range and the 'WD' is a heavy duty version of the same pad.

G'day Iain,
That's what happens when you put pubesent kids behind the counter, they've got no idea what they're on about. Gone are the days (in most cases) when you walk into eg. Scrurs Bros. and the bloke in the uniform knows his stuff because he's an ex-tradie or the like.
Strewth I'm makng myself out to sound like an old bloke. :eek:

Landcruiser have 2WD as an option on all their vehicles.
A bit of a bugger to swap the pads over when you go from 2 to 4 WD.
and I bet there was an old ex-tradie out the back room laughing so hard he wet himself. :D

Reminds me of an experience years ago.
Boss had 12 VW's to repair (most written off) so he calls (VW Australia head office) can you help?
Sure! they will send out their expert. He arrived with a laptop and proceeds to list all the parts wanted. End result: a mess, wrong partS, wrong yearS wrong everything.
So we call the local VW dealer he sends out their spare parts guY armed with a note pad and pencil. He writes down all the parts and then proceeds to add IN the part number and price off the top of his head.
Everyone was correct!!!

What a moron....
VW part numbers are the easiest there is to read;
123 456 789 ABC
1 = Type (1 beetle/2 kombi/ 3 fastback etc)
23 = Model/version
4 = main part group
56 = part sub group
789 = componant
easy........there you have it ....useless information for the day.:p

Sorry Clinton Ive gotta agree with Iain there... last time I heard saw or drove a 2WD LANDCRUISER was... well... never! No such animal as far as I know... now Im not an expert but well sayin a LANDCRUISER is 2WD is like sayin you can drive a Ferrari up the gunbarrel or canning stock route!! :eek: You may start the trip but take it of the bitumine and its buggared but take a Landcruiser of the bitumine its at home! :cool:
No Im not talking about those peices of shyte known as Prados or whatever the sheilas are drivin the kids to school in heck Ive not driven a new one since the 80 series was new... way overrated and expensive!... but the ones Ive test driven (I do that for fun sometimes ;) go into a way expensive caryard and take a test drive scare the shyte outta the uptheirownass salesjokers! :cool: ) I wouldnt trust off road in many places far to much plastic and crap nowadays :rolleyes:
So maybe with the new breed of plastic Landcruisers you could be right they may well have a 2WD version nowadays!! :eek: gawd strewth that would be bloody painfull... payin those prices for a Landcruiser and only gettin a sodding 2WD!
Skew ChiDAMN!!

So, the pimply one was right! Slap the Z's on your nice, shiny 4WD, go for a good bushbash and end up with a 2WD after the brakes fade coming down the last hill...

You want cheap parts and a motor mechanic behind the counter. Then the parts wouldn't be cheap!

The last time I drove one was when the transfer case on a 75 series ute shat itself at Israelite Bay (you might know the place, Dingo?). It dropped its guts whilst trying to get out of a bloody big salt pan that had sucked it in down to the floor pan at about 80km/h and (as we found out later) had driven the front axle so far backward that the spring shackles had gone from hangers to struts:eek:. If you haven't managed the conversion, i reckon you've just not been trying hard enough :D.

80 series onwards are full time 4WD with a centre diff lock activated by ther stubby little gear stick, or a switch on the dash in high range.
Having said that, the Government issue PP model still has free wheeling hubs but I have never seen a new one for sale at a dealership.
(PP, Poverty Pack, vinyl upholstery, no electrics, no air, no central locking, skinny wheels etc etc)

You can get a Cruiser to be a 2WD but it takes a bit of effort. If you get a chance, have a look at the latest Kedron Caravans DVD. Here they are, lugging their 3 tonne off-road van up some godforsaken track in Far Nth Qld. Coming up a steepish hill into a right turn when rrrrrrttttt. Ripped the guts out of the front diff. Fortunately, a simple trip to the nearest? dealer and gawd-knows how many thousands of $ later, back to new again.
I don't know if they were using Z or WD pads though. :D
