super gloss/super tough finish

Hey there,

I have nearly completed a beautiful cabinet made from Silky Oak and want to put a very glossy finish to it. I have heard from a table manufacturer that they use a home formulated oil (possibly with Tung oil), and the finish is quite glossy and stronger than polyurethane (since polyurethane cracks when hit hard). Could anybody please comment on any product that gives a highly glossy finish whilst being tougher than polyurethane. One other thing, is it best to spray on the finish, or to brush it on?

Geez mate you don't want much eh! ;)

If you want harder then Poly-u then go automotive finish's. Yeah I am serious, but wouldn't advise it.

If you have the facilities try using a two part acid cure lacquer harder than poly-u and yet forgiving in that it will flex not to mention about 90% resistant to household chemicals etc....

Your options are only limited by your expertise..

Automotive finishes on timber work great with a couple of cautions.
you realy need to use all automotive products on a given piece to realy get an advantage.
however not many cars are finished in a totaly clear finish as such most of the surface preparation products such as primers & fillers are coloured.
automotice finishes will show up any poor surface preparation.

I use a few automotive finishes but a mate who builds specialised theatrical props works almost exclusively in them.

His results are fabulous and very durable but almost always solid colours.

There is a huge variety of automotive ranging from jammy enamels thru to verrrry funky stuff even an emerging water borne system or two.

well worth the invertigation if you are verry keen & know your stuff.
