Made an Oregan table about a year ago, finished with Sponsor's Shellac and trad wax.

Gets used a lot and needs the surface re-doing.

Knowing what I now know, I'll use hard shellac.

Question is, how do I remove the existing finish without leaving an awful, gooey mess or staining the timber?

Turps removes wax. meths removes shellac, thinners removes both at once.

In practical terms: a wipe with a turps dampened rag will remove the wax, then wash off the shellac using about 1 litre of meths and steel wool or a kitchen scourer. Final wash with another .5 litre of meths. No gooey mess
