Ok lovers, put it away.
I picked up an old organ yesterday, and it was made in the USofA in 1899.
The thing didnt work, well it let out some sork of squeel, sort of..
So I decided to rescue the timber.
It looks like Tassie Blackwood, so figured it would be made of Cherry?
Have any of you used Cherry and BW? And are they similar?
I can get piccies if you want, but it will be after Tuesday.
Al  :)

They are fairly different and would be quite easy to tell the difference between the two.
I have used a shipload of Am Cherry and they both have a similar density..They both smell very different too when cut.
If it was made in the U.S. I'm tipping its cherry....throw up some pics yarrr!

If it looks like blackwood, but came from the US, my guess is that it is walnut. Cherry is reddish brown, but walnut is dark brown.

Maybe its both?
There is some reddish brown stuff that is hidden inside the thing, there is also some darker stuff which is open to the elements.
I thought Cherry went darker when exposed to the sun?
Maybe the darker stuff is Cherry also?
Both are very open grained compared to Oz timber, almost like Oak, there is also a bit of Oak in the organ too, and some unidentified Pine.
The keys are Ebony, and some sort of plastic that is supposed to be Ivory celluloid?, I did the burn test for Ivory and nearly set the shop alight. :o :D

You say your organ is from 1899 and you're 51. How does that work?

Cherry is pretty close grained.
Still might be cherry, might be something else too though, especially if it's open grained.
If they keys caught fire quickly, then they are celluloid and don't breathe the fumes unless you want to join your organ in an early grave. ;)

Ok Groovers.
Here are some pictures of the timber I saved from the old organ.
So what is it?
I also got some Cedar and some Oak from it.
There is also a mystery timber too, it feels like Cedar but is green inside with a silvery sheen, it cant be treated as the organ is from 1899.
The whole lot of timber filled the back of a Ford Station Wagon, so Im pleased with the haul.
I will make something Gothic from it along the lines of the original organ, maybe a hall table.
