View Full Version : I'm officially Unemployed
Gumby

:D Well, after all theses years, the sale of my share of the business to my partner (business variety - not the other kind) goes through tomorrow morning.
I cleaned out the desk and my whole office today. Pretty sad really. :( We opened that business in 1994 with nothing and finished up with 3 offices, 22 employees and all the crap that goes along with it.
I'm now taking a short break but starting to wonder what to do for the last 10 or so years of my working life. Too young to retire.
maybe IT - fixing computers, just working by myself. That would make a nice change. :)
Very mixed feelings tonight. It didn't hit me until i walked out of the office this evening and handed the whole lot to my Sales Manager of 10 years.
:( Think I'll hit the red.

wow Gumby Congrats and commiserations all at once. Leaving your baby is kind of like one of your kids moving out of home. Happy because you have time to yourself and that they are growing up but sad too because they are no longer dependant on you for anything, but you know that you will get calls asking how to do different things and so on.
Well done on the separation and just turn to the shed for inspiration regarding your next ten years. Perhaps teaching? Or running your own how to clinics.....
The mind boggles

I'm officially Unemployed
So on Friday you're off to see Centrelink.:D :D :D
Take a few months off to see the roses, get into the shed and relax and let your old business get out of your system. Then when rested look around for what to do next. Maybe Al will keep his job open? :D
Peter.

BTW, Happy Lastday mate. (I didn't say birthday did I? :D )
From this day forward, the 13th of September will be 'Gumby's lastday.'
Only 'cos he hates birthdays. :D
Strange coincidence, the 13th of September was the day I joined the RAAF so my discharge date was the 12th. (Last century, not yesterday)
Hey Gumby, you want a computer business?
I can't sell mine so I'm giving it away.

Hey Ian!
Congratulations and a touch also of sympathy for the 'hollowness' that you're probably feeling.
I have no doubt that you'll find plenty of things to do, some of which may even turn a profit :D
You've built something and are now taking some of the rewards for doing so. Good on you and Bon Chance mon ami!

Wow, the end of a chapter but with many more to unfold.
Remember the book, "Passages"? One stage leads in to the next.
While you have your initialshort-term break, give serious thought to what things you want to do. Think of the luxury, of what you want to do as distinct from what you MUST do.:D

Gumbles old son, well done!
I did the same starting about five years ago, and got a job! Sold the last of our businesses about 18 months ago, but it's just bloody marvellous. (After you get over the shock and emotion and all that stuff).
My missus couldn't believe it, I was offered a consulting job so I'd get on the train and go to town and come home with money. We wondered how long that lark had been going on.
I still get itchy feet occasionally, but really, working for someone else is a splendid way of filling in a few terribly enjoyable years! (and no bad debts!)
Congratulations anyway!
Cheers,
P

Gee Gumby - must be very strange for you! Can recall when I left my very secure job with the health department about 12 years ago after working for them in one capacity or another all my working life. Felt totally empty and scared stupid and wondering how the hell I was going to raise a dollar. After 3 months of doing SFA except loafing around, started doing for others what I had always done for myself - paving, painting, building gardens, etc. Never looked back, never had a day when there wasn;t work to go to, always had the choice of will I or won;t I work today.
I really hope that the next stage in your life is exciting and fulfilling and maybe completely different to the last one. And that you enjoy it all, once the shock has gone and you have a few ideas about which direction you are going. I bet you already have a 'feel' for what comes next, just let it surface and follow it.
Good luck!
Jeff (no apologies for the deep and meaningfuls either, I reckon this is a pretty important event in a bloke's life!)

Gumby,
you made the break and good on you. I did the same some years ago and am now doing something I never thought I would be doing. My life in the corporate world taught me something besides watching a bunch of crawling backstabbing butt kissers. I am now working as a consultant building factories all over the world. I haven't been in my shed for seven months and don't mind too much because the current challenges are great, they keep me alive. Just remember as one door close another opens. As long as you are optimistic and have confidence in yourself, all things are possible. I have done the "smelling the roses" bit and after a few months they stink. Re-aim your abilities and dreams and have a go, you won't regret it.

Is this a good example of "the best laid plans of mouse and man. .."? (pun on"Laid").
Little wonder that she fell asleep with the WWF choir singing hits from the 60s in the background!
I walked out on my job of 20 years about four years ago - At the time it was almost as bad a feeling as when my Dad died. Now I realise that it was the best thing that could have happened.
All the best for your future. Have a great holiday and don't start working until you're ready to (or need to - whichever comes first!)

Dont bother with computers mate its crap out there in pc land.
Too many techs who will work for rates you can make flippin burgers.
IT has had a big downsize over the past 18 months and all those little techs who used to work in the corporate sector are now in the business on the ground.
Don't #### bricks
have a month or two off
something will turn up in the meantime
give your brain a spell and when you feel betterer and your head is clear an idea will come as to what you will do next.
Stop freakin out man it will all be cool in a little while.....
