Hi all,
My doctor recons that if you are drinking more than 4 standard drinks a day that you have a drinking problem.
Well 4 standard drinks = 2.85 stubbies
or 1.3 glasses of wine by my calculations.
so my questions are :-

1.Who came up with this figure?
2. What planet do they come from?
3. If they invited you over for a party would you go?
4. How many standard drinks are there in a bottle of Metho?
5. Does putting an umbrella in your drink render it non-standard so OK?

Yep it is truely a farce. I managed a bar and one of my workers was charged with serving alcohol to intoxicated persons.

We were all questioned and questioned again. In the end I told these gits that to the letter of the law I can only serve a person one drink and then no longer can they be served as technically they are already 'intoxicated'. To this this person had no argument. Such a crap law should not exist.

The code, section 8.3.6 to 8.3.10 doesn't say anything about 'standard' but section 8.3.9.2 says that any drink with a little umbrella shall not be consumed by blokes in or near sheds.

I know it doesn't answer your question but it does shed (no pun intended) some light on what to do about that umbrella idea. :D

I have the answer to Q2. It would be Pluto, as Pluto is no longer a planet, it doesn't count and nor do they. :)

1.3 glasses wine????

How big are your glasses? I presume we're talking about schooners.

Who sets these 'standards'? Some nerdy, academic I expect, looking to get published and thus increase his hold on tenure, so's he don't have to get a real job and (God forbid) face some risk and actually do some work.

Its my liver and I'll keep it busy, thanks.

Anyway, what a waste to go to your grave with a perfectly functional liver.

Hi all,
My doctor recons that if you are drinking more than 4 standard drinks a day that you have a drinking problem.
Well 4 standard drinks = 2.85 stubbies
or 1.3 glasses of wine by my calculations.
so my questions are :-

1. Who came up with this figure?medicos. But do you trust them? should you trust them?

2. What planet do they come from?earth

3. If they invited you over for a party would you go?why not? You only have a drinking problem if you shout out loud "I have more than 4 drinks every day"

4. How many standard drinks are there in a bottle of Metho?who cares?

5. Does putting an umbrella in your drink render it non-standard so OK?not if you're a real bloke

But seriously. If you can't get through the day without having at least four drinks, then you have a drinking problem.
Sorry, but that's how it is. It's a sign of alcoholic dependency. In the same way that regular use of cocaine or methamphetamine or heroin would indicate you have a drug problem.

If you usually have more than four drinks a day but can go a week without any at all, you don't have a problem.

AND, so you don't get the wrong idea, you'd be welcome at my next bar-b-que

You gotta give..........that grog away!

You gotta give..........that grog away!!!!

I work daily with drug addicts n alcoholics and get a constant reminder of how dangerous any drug is.

Its frightening too see just how effective a street labotomy can be with most of the people I work with being truely (*#%@($@%)$#%_ UP! until they have some time off what ever there into to get better.

Alcohol effects ever major system of the body n if you have to much to often you'll pay the price......................eventually

If your not sure if you have a problem give up for 6 months. If you think about or crav grog you'll know your gone!!!

2 standard drinks per night is considered safe anything above this is doing you damage

Seriously though, I don't think the amount you drink has much to do with whether you are an alcoholic or not. Some people have one drink and are hooked for life, others try it and hate it and never drink again (poor bastards).

I would go as far as to say that MOST people who drink are not in danger of becoming alcoholics. I know a few people who I would consider to have a drinking problem. The rest are just people like me who like a drink but could go for weeks without one and not think twice about it. I believe some people just have a genetic trait or whatever that makes them alcoholics.

As for craving a drink, well, there are plenty of times when I think "God, I could use a beer". That doesn't make me an alcoholic, regardless of how long it has been since I had a drink. The classic signs of an addiction are withdrawal symptoms and thankfully I never suffer from those. Saying that if you give up drinking for 6 months and ever crave a drink then you have a problem is rubbish. If you crave a drink after a day or two, then yes, you may have a problem. Or maybe you just had a hard day. I suppose it depends on your definition of craving. If your hands are trembling and you can't function without a drink, then call AA.

As for the health problems, well yes if you down 4 beers every night whether you need them or not, you are probably not doing yourself a lot of good. I think that the actual number is arbitrary. They have to pick a number, like they had to pick a cut off for blood alcohol for driving. They usually go for a low number to be safe. There are plenty of people who have more than 2 drinks a day and still live into their 90's but plenty of others who drink less and die young, so work that one out.

Everything in moderation ;)

Regards lou

Lou,

According to this article: http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=21149 , a maximum of four standard drinks (10 mL of alcohol) a day, is low-risk, NOT two.

I think it is counter-productive to try and scare people off grog by quoting a very low figure as a maximum, since there are many people, and I am one, who drink at the rate of three or four standard drinks a day without any noticeable ill-effect.

I'm not saying that. These are yours words not mine please don't misquote or try to associate your interpretations with my statement.

And please please use appropriate references so that you do not spread misinformation. I suggest you get your references from the World Health organisation or the NSW Health Websites.

To state low risk drinking is not doing you any damage is misinformation. REgardless I should know better and won't continue to address or debate this manner any further on a Woodwork forum.

Lou,

You may not want to discuss this further, but I wish to address the points you raised. I did not misquote you; You said in the above quote that more than two drinks a day is doing you harm. That does not accord with the alcohol fact sheet on the website of the NSW Health department, which you recommended as a source; that fact-sheet supports what I said, namely, that up to 4 standard drinks a day is low-risk for males even in the long term. I may have misinterpreted your intention in suggesting that you were trying to scare people off grog. However, I think it is best that people know that they are still in the low-risk category with up to 4 drinks a day. I suppose it is possible that some people may be slightly harmed with between 2 and 4 drinks a day, but presumably the risk is low, if the NSW Health Dept says so in their fact sheet; whereas you contend, in the above quote, without any caveats, that anything above two drinks is harmful.

I got sauced up on Ouzo in Vietnam, now even the taste of an aniseed lifesaver makes me puke, same goes for rum, bloody awful tongue tearing acid, however, love a good single malt or a properly brewed beer (not the local made tasteless bitter fizz).
My hands shake at times and people assume this is alcohol, never consider the head injury bestowed upon me some years ago in a car accident.
I do get a little p!ssed off about that.

as I tell my 7 year old maths is everywhere ...

there's 385ml in a stubbie, so 10ml of alcohol would represent 10/385 = ~2.5% (i.e. a low strength beer)
for full strength beer at 5% alcohol = 385 x 0.05 = ~20ml = ~2 standard drinks
so 3 full strength stubbies would equal a bit less than 6 standard drinks

I'll let you do the maths on your daily tipple ...

My daily tipple is two large sherries, 200 mL of 18% alcohol = 36 mL of alcohol; i.e. just a bit below the daily max for low risk of 40 mL of alcohol.

The wowsers are just more vocal because they're miserable about not drinking.

4 beers a day is about my lot, starting usually about 3pm-ish to wash the sawdust down, then a couple more before dinner and usually one with. If that makes me an alcoholic, I'll have to up the dose - I hate doing things by halves.;)
